Metal polishing in the Montessori Practical Life curriculum helps children develop fine motor skills, focus, and a sense of responsibility. šŸ˜

By engaging in this purposeful task, children learn to care for and maintain objects, promoting independence and attention to detail. This activity also encourages patience, as it requires time and effort to achieve a shiny, polished result. Additionally, metal polishing fosters a sense of accomplishment and respect for the materials around them, connecting children to the beauty of their environment and the value of taking care of it.

It’s completely normal for toddlers to struggle with self-regulation, sharing, expressing empathy, resolving conflicts, or understanding someone else’s point of view. A key reason is that they’re still developing ā€œTheory of Mindā€ā€”the ability to recognize and consider others’ thoughts and feelings—which typically begins to emerge closer to age 4.

This insight is just a glimpse of our newest Compass Guide that covers why Hitting and Biting is a common toddler behavior, and what to do about it. We build digital learning resources like this exclusively for our enrolled caregivers. It’s one of the many perks of being part of our school community.

We believe your child's first school experience should be a genuine partnership and source of community. šŸ«¶āœØā™„ļø

What’s this Montessori material? The Baric Tablets!

It’s a box of wooden tablets made from three types of wood, each with a distinct density. There are 6–10 tablets of each type, which can also be visually sorted by their color.

How does it work?
With a blindfold on, the child weighs each tablet in their hands and sorts them by weight, learning terms like heavy, heavier, heaviest or light, lighter, lightest.

Why is this important?
It refines their baric perception—the ability to discern differences in weight through touch.

How can you support this at home?
Offer opportunities to explore objects with varying densities, like wooden spoons, metal tools, or lightweight fabrics. Let them feel the difference! 🪵✨
