Nicole is joining us as an Academic Coach and brings 10 years of experience in education. She began her career as a substitute teacher in the McHenry school districts before working one-on-one with elementary students in special education. For the past five years, she has taught Family and Consumer Sciences at Elgin High School.

Nicole’s diverse experience has strengthened her passion for helping students of all ages learn, grow, and feel supported. She is committed to creating a positive, welcoming, and safe environment where every student feels valued and encouraged.

💛 Not every child needs the same thing to have the same chance.

This is such an important reminder—especially as we head into a new school year.

Some children need visual supports to understand what comes next.
Some need extra time to process information.
Some need movement breaks so their brains and bodies are ready to focus.
Some need a calm space to regulate.
And some need one-on-one support to build skills, confidence, and independence.

These aren’t “extras.” They are supports that help children access learning in the way that works best for their brain.

7/27/26 UPDATE **Wonderful news for Emma! ❤️

After reviewing all of her test results, the medical team has determined that everything came back negative for infection. While we still do not have answers as to why this happened, we are so grateful that Emma will no longer need a PICC line and can stop the antibiotics! 🥳

Emma also reached another huge milestone by completing stairs during physical therapy. She continues to make incredible progress each day.

There was some discussion among the team because her medication levels are not fully therapeutic yet, but her cardiologist feels confident that they can be safely monitored and managed at home.

And now for the best news… **Emma is going home!** ❤️

Her family will be able to administer her medications at home, with follow-up appointments next week to make sure everything continues moving in the right direction.

Thank you so much to everyone who has prayed, donated, shared, checked in, and supported Emma and her family throughout this journey. The generosity and love shown to them has been truly unbelievable. Please continue to keep Emma in your thoughts and prayers as she begins the next part of her recovery at home. ❤️

Emma Update 💗

Thank you all so much for the continued prayers, love, and support. We wanted to share another update on Emma's recovery.

Last night was incredibly difficult. Emma struggled with a lot of pain and discomfort, making it hard for her to get the rest she desperately needs. Our hope today is that the doctors will be able to remove one, and possibly two, of her chest tubes. Unfortunately, they can't remove them all yet because there is still a significant amount of fluid around her heart and lungs.

As for answers, we're still searching. At this point, the medical team has brought in four additional specialists to help determine why this happened. The only thing they know so far is that the tissue in part of Emma's heart began to deteriorate, but they still don't know what caused it.

The infectious disease team has been running what feels like countless tests, but so far nothing has provided the answers they're looking for. The additional specialists are now approaching things from different angles, ordering more tests and evaluations in hopes of finding the underlying cause.

Right now, our biggest goals are simple: to get Emma's pain under control, hopefully remove at least one of the drain tubes today, and pray that the IV antibiotics begin to do their job while the doctors continue searching for answers.

It's heartbreaking to see her feeling so defeated right now. We know the lack of sleep, the pain, and everything she's endured over the past several days are taking a toll on her. Please continue to pray specifically for her comfort, strength, healing, and for wisdom and guidance for every doctor caring for her.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all for standing beside us through this journey. Your prayers, messages, donations, and kindness have carried us through some incredibly difficult days. We are so grateful to have such an amazing community in our corner. 💕

❤️ Emma Update ❤️

We have an update to share on Emma.

Emma is out of surgery, and overall, things went well. During the procedure, the surgeons discovered that she actually had two bleeds. They were able to successfully repair both, but the biggest question still remains... why did this happen?

The next several hours are extremely critical as Emma begins her recovery. Her medical team will also be running additional tests to help determine what caused these unexpected complications and to provide more answers for her family.

Please continue to keep Emma, her parents, her medical team, and everyone who loves her in your thoughts and prayers. Every prayer, every share, and every message of support means more than words can express.

Let's continue surrounding Emma with love as she fights through this next stage of her journey. ❤️

🎉 What an incredible day at the McHenry Fiesta Days Parade! 🎉

Learning Linx was proud to be part of this amazing community tradition, and we had so much fun celebrating with everyone who came out! 💙💚

Not all communication requires words. 💜

Many nonverbal children understand far more than they are able to express. Every gesture, facial expression, picture, sign, or device they use is meaningful communication—it’s our job to recognize it and respond with patience and understanding.

Here are a few simple ways you can support a nonverbal child:
✅ Use visual supports
✅ Give plenty of wait time after asking a question
✅ Offer choices instead of open-ended questions
✅ Pair words with gestures
✅ Acknowledge every communication attempt
✅ Follow their interests to increase engagement
✅ Keep routines consistent and predictable

Remember, communication is about connection—not just speech. When we meet children where they are, we help them build confidence, reduce frustration, and create meaningful interactions.

💙 Sometimes, what looks like “bad behavior” is really a child asking for help.

Children don’t always have the words to say, “I’m overwhelmed,” “I’m anxious,” or “I need a break.” Instead, those feelings often show up through their behavior.

Some signs that a child may be mentally or emotionally exhausted include:
✨ Increased irritability or frequent meltdowns
✨ Constant worrying or overthinking
✨ Sadness or frequent crying
✨ Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed
✨ Frequent headaches or stomachaches without a medical cause
✨ Changes in sleep patterns or constant fatigue
✨ Withdrawing from family and friends

These behaviors aren’t always signs of defiance—they may be signs that a child is carrying more than they know how to manage.
