Garrett College connections are making an impact with the West Virginia Black Bears. Sport Management graduate and former Laker wrestler EJ Guy serves as the team’s field and facility manager, while Sophia Putnam, a former guest lecturer in GC’s Sport Management program, serves as client relations and marketing coordinator.

Both are putting their education and internship experiences to work behind the scenes—from maintaining the ballpark to creating memorable experiences for fans.

“It doesn’t matter whether you come from a small community college like Garrett College or a huge institution like WVU. It’s about the effort you’re putting into it.” — Sophia Putnam

We love seeing Garrett College connections succeeding in the sports industry! ⚓

From Western Maryland to the summit of Mount Baker! 🏔️

Six Outdoor Leadership & Adventure Education students traveled to Washington State’s Cascade Range for a 12-day alpine climbing expedition, putting their skills to the test while completing the College’s three-course alpine climbing track.

Along the way, students summited the 10,781-foot Mount Baker, practiced crevasse rescue and risk-management techniques, and connected with professionals to learn more about careers in alpine climbing and mountaineering.

“This trip gave them a picture of a component of the outdoor industry that you wouldn’t get to see in Western Maryland.” — OLA Professor Andy Hershey

What a way to take learning beyond the classroom! 🧗‍♂️⛰️

🎓 Student Spotlight: Amanda McCormick

Meet Amanda McCormick, an Information Technology/Graphic & Web Design student who now calls Oakland, Maryland home.

Amanda chose Garrett College for an affordable start close to home and the opportunity to build a strong foundation before transferring to a four-year institution. Along the way, she’s found more than an education—she’s built friendships and become part of the campus community through her work-study position in the library.

“I’ve met a lot of people from being at the circulation desk, and I wouldn’t have met some of my friends if I hadn’t taken on this job.”

Even during a challenging semester, Amanda continues to find ways to stay on top of her coursework while enjoying opportunities like design class, campus activities, and time with friends.

Her advice to future students? “The education that Garrett College offers is both affordable and manageable.”

After Garrett, Amanda plans to continue her education at a four-year institution. She’s also working toward earning her real estate and appraisal licenses as she explores where her next steps will take her.
