Fun writing practice

Today our wonderful OT team did a fun activity with us. This is a great idea for at home writing practice. The instructions are as follows:

Combine 3/4 cup of flour with about a 1/2 cup of water (you can add food coloring to the water if you like, but it's not necessary). Pour into a ziploc baggie, removing all of the air from the baggie before sealing it. We recommend reinforcing the seal with some tape.

Reminder: NO Preschool tomorrow 3-7-22 due to preschool screening. We will see you on Tuesday 3-8-22.

Thank you thank you thank you to all our families and friends who supported our fundraiser at Buffalo Wings and Rings tonight! It was great seeing so many of you!

Reading to each other

We are always very vocal about the importance of reading to your child. But did you know it is important to let them try to read to you too? It's as simple as giving them a book and asking them to look at the pictures and tell you what they think the story is about. It gives them practice learning how books work (reading left to right, where the beginning of the story is as opposed to the end or middle, where is the title, etc). These are great beginning literary skills and it's so much fun to practice! In this video, students paired up and took turns reading a book to each other.

Don't forget about our fundraiser tomorrow night! Our preschool receives 10% of all food sales between 5-8 pm tomorrow (Wednesday). Help out our school, plus you don't have to cook tomorrow night! Hope to see you all there!!

We have been talking a lot about emotions and what it means to be kind. We have heard many great ideas from our preschoolers like giving someone a hug, sharing toys, opening doors for people or just saying hello with a smile. Today is National Random Acts of Kindness Day and we took this opportunity to show our amazing staff at USV how much we appreciate all they do here at our school. The smiles on not only our students faces but those we visited made for a great day in preschool. In a world where you can be anything, be kind. ♥️

Team work

Here is a fun activity that our OT's did with us today. This is very simple and you can do it at home. If you don't have popsicle sticks, you can use toothpicks, silverware, straws, french fries, or just about anything!

AM students drop off will be at the front doors. Preschool doors are not accessible today. Please wait with your child until we are out front. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Please join us next Wednesday for our classroom fundraiser!

As we continue to learn about emotions, at home you can have some great discussions about how your child is feeling, how it is normal to feel all the different emotions, and what they can do to help them feel better when upset.

Everyone stay warm and please be safe if you have to be out tomorrow!! ❄️☃️

Groundhog Day

Today we did an activity for Groundhog's day where we had the students vote if they thought the groundhog would see his shadow or not. Then we watched the news to see who was right! This also promotes independent thinking. At home, you can practice this by voting or guessing about almost anything!

Nursery Rhymes

Each day we spend a little bit of time working on nursery rhymes. Nursery rhymes are great for helping to strengthen language skills. You can practice nursery rhymes during downtime at home and in the car!

Emotions Matching Game

This week we are learning about emotions. At one of our centers, we had this fun matching game. At home, you can play this game with pictures cut out of a magazine or printed off the computer.

Stringing beads

If you happen to have access to some of these fun stringing beads, they are a great and easy way to work on some things at home. You can work on colors and letter recognition, as well as fine motor skills. If you don't happen to have any beads, you can use a shoe string and some uncooked macaroni!

USV is on a 2 hour delay today 1-26-22
Delay schedule is as follows:
AM session 10:00-12:10
PM session 1:00-3:10

Munchie the Monster

We got a new student in our classroom! This is Munchie the Monster! He only eats what we tell him to eat! Today he was only allowed to eat words that start with the letter "G". This is something that we do during transitions. For example, before we dismiss to go to centers, we might have students feed Munchie a picture of something that rhymes with "cat". Or before we line up we might feed Munchie things that are blue. This is such a simple game you can play at home! You can make your own "monster" at home with an old shoe box, or any kind of container. You could have your monster eat rhyming words, certain colors, specific beginning sounds, shapes, and so much more!

USV is on a 2 hour delay tomorrow 1-25-22
Delay schedule is as follows:
AM session 10:00-12:10
PM session 1:00-3:10

No breakfast for the AM session so please bring a light snack. PM students will still receive lunch.

For the past several weeks, we have been learning about winter animals and hibernation. We have also been working very hard on bears that can open and close their eyes! Today we made a cave out of our treehouse. After that we read the story "Bear Can't Sleep", closed our bears' eyes, and put them to bed in our cave where they will sleep until spring! At home, ask your child questions about hibernation and maybe research as a family what other animals besides bears hibernate!

Today we introduced a new vocabulary word to our students as we are learning about "habitats". To help them remember what that word means, we gave them some supplies to use to create a habitat for a bear. As you can see, it doesn't really matter what supplies you have on hand, as they can build with just about anything. This not only introduces new vocabulary and helps drive home its meaning, but it also encourages the use of imagination, social skills of working together, and strengthening those finger and hand muscles! At home, feel free to select an animal and give your preschooler some supplies that you happen to have in the cabinet and let them see what kind of habitat they can build!

A reminder about our schedule next week! Have a great weekend!!

Something that we use in our classroom is the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum. Each day we play fun games while teaching about such things as rhyming, syllables, beginning sounds, and so much more! At home you can play some of these fun games with your child. Have them try to clap out the syllables in their name. You can also play a rhyming word game, or even break apart words like you will see in this video.

Hibernation | The Dr. Binocs Show | Learn Videos For Kids

Winter Bingo

A good game of bingo can teach your child so much! They are learning how to follow directions and how to listen to the teacher, working on vocabulary, and even learning that you don't always win. At home we want to encourage you to take some time to play simple games with your preschooler. Not only will they be learning, but time together is always time well spent!
