Thank you to West Farms! High school students were able to learn from a great family about corn and soybeans today. First students saw how grain was stored, how to estimate yields and finally they were able to ride along for part of the soybean harvest.

Thank you to Caleb, Andy, Roger, Phil and Jonah for letting our students visit today.

And cannot leave out Mrs. Nancy West for feeding the kids. The brownies were a hit for sure.

Our 7th and 8th grade NMS Ag students had the opportunity to explore several different apple varieties in class as they observed and evaluated each one based on taste, texture, and best uses. Students also sampled fresh apple c***r, identified their favorite varieties, and even designed their own agritourism businesses.

Northern Spy and Golden Delicious were the student favorites!

Next, students will put their knowledge to work by creating a value-added apple product. They’ll use what they learned about each apple’s characteristics to make homemade applesauce and apple butter—turning fresh apples into a finished product, understanding that just because an apple isn’t great for snacking, it still has value in a different form that can generate income for farmers through value added products.

Northwest Middle SCCTC FFA members recently had the opportunity to visit Karnes Orchard on this beautiful fall day!

This orchard has been in production since 1873, with more than 5,000 apple trees growing across 14 acres and an incredible 60 different apple varieties.

Students toured the orchard, processing facility where apples are graded, the c***r mill, and the sales floor. They also learned the proper way to pick an apple using picking bags and got a demonstration from Ms. Zelda before putting their new skills to work!

Of course, no orchard visit would be complete without a taste test! Students sampled either a Ludacris or EverCrisp apple, and they also enjoyed refreshing apple c***r slushies!

A huge thank-you to Karnes Orchard for sharing their knowledge, history, and passion for agriculture with our FFA members! Experiences like this help students see agriculture beyond the classroom and learn directly from the people who make it happen.

The rest of the week will include an apple taste test, agritourism business plan and marketing, along with making homemade apple sauce in class.

This week was full of hands on learning happening in our ag classes!

The 7th grade agriculture students were busy planting a fall garden with radishes, kale, carrots, beets, and bok choy, while cleaning and preparing our raised beds for the next growing season!

The 8th graders are exploring diversified agriculture by growing radishes, cucumbers, and lettuce, learning about vertical agriculture, and caring for our small animals. They’ve been feeding our laying hens, and even giving our guinea pigs some well deserved baths, grooming, and nail trims. All 8th grade students have a supervised agricultural experience project set up in the AET and have been making progress toward completing their individual projects ranging from aquaponics, to dog grooming, to ag mechanics and more!

NMS agriculture students have been busy raising the second batch of broiler chickens, tracking weights each week, feeding, watering, and observing health of the birds daily. The biggest bird came in at over 4 lbs at the most recent weigh in!

Members also enjoyed the first chapter meeting of the year with yummy cake pops and updates about activities and events from the NMS officer team.

NHS Ag students have been very busy since school started. They have been living the FFA motto and “Doing to Learn”.

Ag 2 students cleared the courtyard and replanted with some fall crops of Turnips, radishes and lettuce. They have also been tracking the growth of broiler chickens, cleaning pens and taking excellent care of the chickens.

Ag 3 students built our 5 Hydroponics units, started seeds and have now transplanted. Our towers can be seen in the cafeteria and the 2nd floor hallway. They have also been trying out their creative skills with a little bit of floral design.
