Culture. Creativity. Community.

Today, the Black History Gallery had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Gary Lewis, Executive Director of the Southwest Mississippi Center for Culture & Learning at Alcorn State University.

The Center's mission to celebrate culture, creativity, and community aligns closely with the work we are doing here in McComb to preserve local history, elevate community voices, and create meaningful connections between our past and our future.

Our region is rich with stories, traditions, artistic expression, and cultural resources that deserve to be preserved, shared, and experienced by future generations.

Visits like today's remind us of the importance of building relationships among institutions and communities that recognize history and culture as valuable resources for education, creativity, and community development.

We thank Dr. Lewis for taking the time to visit the Gallery, experience our exhibits, and learn more about our work. We look forward to opportunities for continued dialogue and collaboration.

Your Gallery Experience Awaits!

Whether you're a lifelong resident, a student, an educator, or someone passing through Southwest Mississippi, we invite you to experience the stories, people, and cultural contributions that make our region extraordinary.

Explore our exhibits, discover local connections to national history, and experience how the past continues to shape our communities today.

A Vision of Unity, A Work of Art, A Community Collaboration!

The finishing touches are complete, and a new piece of public art now has a home inside the McComb Martin Luther King Jr. Center Complex!

More than paint on a wall, this mural is a celebration of Dr. King's legacy, the power of creativity, and what can happen when community organizations work together toward a shared vision.

The mural was made possible through funding from the Keep America Beautiful (KAB) Martin Luther King Jr. Corridor Community Grant, secured by McComb's Black History Gallery.

We extend our appreciation to artist Kayla Walker of ArtfullyHis, the students of SMMEIIS Institute (LeAnna Gordon, Trinity Gordon, Madyson Jackson, LaCarley Quin,Ezekiel Clark,
Kennedy Boss, Karlee Sibley) and McComb Parks and Recreation for their contributions to bringing this project to life.

What makes this project especially meaningful is the involvement of our young people. Through art, they have an opportunity to connect with history, contribute to a shared community space, and see how their creativity can become part of something lasting.

Public art does more than beautify a building. It creates conversation, strengthens community pride, and transforms ordinary spaces into places of inspiration and reflection.

In addition to the mural, the Black History Gallery also donated a Martin Luther King Jr. collage artwork to the MLK Center Complex, further enriching the space with another visual tribute to Dr. King's life, leadership, and enduring influence.

Dr. King's legacy was never simply about remembering what happened yesterday. It challenges us to consider what we are willing to do today.

The Black History Gallery is proud to have helped secure the resources for this project and to support another creative investment in McComb's cultural landscape.

The next time you visit the MLK Center Complex, take a moment to experience the mural and reflect on the legacy it represents.
History Lives Here. And Now, It Lives on This Wall.

A Young Author Visits the Black History Gallery!

Look who stopped by the Black History Gallery!
Marris paid us a visit to check out his very own book, I Decide My Limits: More Than What They Can See, which has a place on the shelves of the Galleryโ€™s library.

Thereโ€™s something special about a young author seeing his work alongside books that preserve history, share knowledge, and inspire future generations.

Our library isn't just a collection of books. It's a place where stories are valued, voices are celebrated, and young people can see themselves as contributors to the literary world.

Marris isn't just reading history. He's writing his own!

History Lives Here. And so do the stories of tomorrow.
