Honoring a Legacy of Education, Service & Sisterhood

The Phi Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was honored to host a Tree Planting Ceremony celebrating the remarkable life and legacy of Mrs. Margaret Wilson Therrell—Charter Member of Phi Mu Omega Chapter and distinguished Pearl and Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.

The celebration brought together generations touched by Mrs. Therrell’s service. Former students from throughout her 1959–1991 career were present, including three students from Prentiss, Mississippi, where she began her teaching career in Jefferson Davis County in 1959. Alumni of the Brookhaven School District and Alcorn State University, along with family, friends, church members, community leaders, and Sorority members, gathered to honor her enduring influence.

Following retirement from education, Mrs. Therrell continued serving her community as a local entrepreneur, allowing the chapter to highlight multiple Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority program initiatives through her lifelong example of education, leadership, service, and economic empowerment.

Celebrating her 90th birthday this year, Mrs. Therrell shared words of wisdom and encouragement as heartfelt expressions of admiration and appreciation echoed throughout the ceremony. Mayor Larry Jointer closed the program with remarks and prayer.

The tree planted in her honor will stand as a living symbol of her legacy—deeply rooted in service and continuing to branch outward through generations of lives she has touched.

Phi Mu Omega: Championing Service, Empowering Sisterhood

Phi Mu Omega Chapter gathered in the Crescent City for a retreat filled with purpose, planning, and sisterhood. We planned Sisterly Relations activities, advanced strategies for voter education and participation, and embraced the new program platform of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.

Guided by our theme—Championing Service. Empowering Sisterhood. Transforming the World.—we planned impactful programs while enjoying a jazz lunch cruise, dinner fellowship, and the vibrant art and culture of the White Linen festivities.

We closed the weekend with a heartfelt message of love and strengthened sisterly bonds before heading home by train, carpool, and convoy—renewed and ready to serve!
