Obituary
Sherry Jean Scholes Welch of McCaysville, Georgia passed away peacefully at her home on 6th December 2021, following an extended illness. Mrs. Welch was born on 13 March 1938, to the late Mr. Alvin Lee and Mrs. Marie Plemmons Scholes. Mrs. Welch was a life-long resident of Fannin County. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Barry Scholes. Survivors include her husband of 61 years Mr. Bobby Eugene Welch of McCaysville, sons Jeffrey Welch of Atlanta, and Zachary (Lori) Welch of McCaysville, GA brother Edison (Elva) Scholes of Franklin, TN, along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Mrs. Welch taught 4th-grade mathematics in the Fannin County School system for 34 years, beginning her career at Mobile Elementary before moving to McCaysville Elementary and ending her career at West Fannin Elementary. She was an impactful teacher who loved her students, and, in turn, they loved her. She made long-lasting friendships with many of her fellow teachers, and the one thing they all had in common was the love and passion for their students and setting them up for success in whatever career endeavor they wanted to pursue. She inspired many of her students to become teachers themselves, which will continue her legacy for generations to come.

Mrs. Welch was passionate about her family, church, friends, and the hundreds of students she taught throughout her career, and she was always a catalyst for bringing people together to celebrate special events and holidays. She was an incredible hostess and chef extraordinaire who frequently whipped up feasts fit for royalty. She loved to travel both domestically and internationally with her family and friends to absorb the experiences the world had to offer. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of McCaysville, GA/Copperhill, TN from childhood to the time of her passing. The love she had for her church and church family was exhibited through the many activities she participated in, including teaching Sunday School for over 60 years, Women on Missions, Youth Training Union, and serving on a pastoral search committee. Her Savior surely welcomed her with the words, “well done, my good and faithful servant”.

Mrs. Welch’s service were held on Thursday, 9th of December at McCaysville/Copperhill First Baptist Church at 2:00 pm, with a public viewing at the church from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm. Interment followed in Crestlawn Cemetery in Copperhill, TN with Pastor Matthew McDaniels officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honor and memorialize Mrs. Welch with donations to The Fannin County Christian Learning Center or the First Baptist Church of McCaysville, GA/Copperhill, TN. Finch-Cochran of McCaysville, GA in charge of the arrangements.

My friend, Dustin Long, took this picture about two weeks ago. He had mentioned that this time of year, the Santa's Workshop would be set up for us to all enjoy! Great memories, but sad, sad sight today. 😞

Does anyone remember what we called the merry-go-round on the playground? Didn't it have an odd name/nickname?
