The From the Forest Senior Apprentices have been cleaning and sorting seeds to give away to individuals that have lost their forest, meadows, streambanks, etc. to the horrendous wild fires of the past two years. Following is a list of what we have on hand. We are committed to collecting seeds for reforestation through this coming autumn and probably beyond.

If you or anyone you know have lost their wild plants due to the wildfires and want to begin restoring the burnt area email me at [email protected] or message me from my website From the Forest Idaho.

We are also willing to collect seeds from a list of “wants” that you provide for us.

I have repeatedly been asked about what happened to the From The Forest Newsletters that I wrote eother month from 2001 - mid-2011 and mailed to subscribers. Yes, I still have them...but there's good and bad news. The bad news is that when Windows 10 did their horrid upgrade they blotted out my previous Windows Office documents. The good news is that I had the newsletters backed up as PDF files. The not-so-good news is I can't seem to edit the PDF newsletters, so they are "as is". Which means, a lot of typo stuff (written pre-spell check). And they are, of course, dated. But there is a lot of good information and there were 64 in all. I have spent the better part of three days getting them loaded onto my website as down loadable PDFs for those of you that feel you may have missed something...bits of my wisdom (before the following years when I gained more), herbal lore and recipes. Ramblings about life's situations back then (i.e. Swine Flu, Bird Flu, threats of chemical warfare). Really, issues that aren't that much different from what we face today...there's always something, isn't there? So, when you have some time, check them out.

HEADS UP APPRENTICES and HERBALISTS

With all the fires in the Northwest, what can we do as herbalists during this crisis? Gather native seeds. The forests are burning hot ~ hotter than normal forest fires. Even plants that would normally recover quickly from a fire will most likely not. The Northwest burned areas will need native seeds to help regenerate native habitats. Gather seeds, it's not too late for some native species. Others can be gathered next spring/summer. It will take years to regenerate what has been lost. We can begin helping now. Gather seeds to gift to herbalists and others in the areas where the devastation has occurred. Elderberry, Hawthorn, Mountain Ash, seeds from Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, Rocky Mountain Maple, Bunchberry, Sagebrush, Mugwort, Wormwood, there are a lot of late season seeds. If you gather seeds and need to know how to process them and seed germination information to pass on to recipients, contact me here.
