Since 2021, National Guard soldiers from across Texas have been stationed across the Rio Grande Valley in support of Operation Lone Star. Last week, the Texas Military Department reached out to our office about an opportunity to speak with some of those soldiers about their education benefits.

The following day, college leadership introduced a new South Texas College initiative: Operation JAG Support, and challenged us to think about opportunities to bring it into the community. We immediately recognized that the upcoming National Guard presentation was the perfect opportunity to do just that.

With support from Communications & Creative Services, we were able to provide soldiers in attendance with information about their education benefits along with materials introducing Operation JAG Support and the resources available through South Texas College.

Thank you to the Texas Military Department for the opportunity to engage directly with our National Guard soldiers, to Communications & Creative Services for supporting us on short notice, and to our college leadership for continuing to make service members and veterans a visible institutional priority.

This week, the Office of Student Veterans Affairs participated in LivingWorks ASIST (Applied Su***de Intervention Skills Training), a nationally recognized workshop that equips participants with practical su***de intervention skills.

Ms. Santa Peña, Director of Counseling Services at South Texas College, invited staff from across the college who work closely with students in their respective roles.

Over the course of the training, participants spent two days working through real-world scenarios and learning what intervention and support can look like in practice. It’s the kind of training that you hope you’ll never need to use, but you’ll be grateful to have if the moment ever comes.

📢 Now Hiring: VA Work-Study Students!

The Office of Student Veterans Affairs is now accepting applications for VA Work-Study students.

If you're using VA education benefits and meet the eligibility requirements for the VA Work-Study Allowance Program, this is a great opportunity to gain valuable work experience while helping fellow veterans and military-connected students.

As a VA Work-Study student, you'll assist with welcoming students, answering questions, helping with VA documentation, and providing general office support. No prior knowledge of VA education benefits is required.

Applications are available at the Office of Student Veterans Affairs on the Pecan, Mid-Valley, and Starr County campuses. We look forward to welcoming new members to our team!

The Office of Student Veterans Affairs would like to thank our partners at U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection for joining us at South Texas College.

Representatives from both agencies shared insight into careers in federal service and connected with students, faculty, staff, and community members throughout the event.

While we expected interest from students and community members, what we didn’t expect was the number of faculty and staff who stopped by throughout the day to learn more about careers with both agencies.

Most of all, we’re grateful to be in a position where we can help bring opportunities like this to our students, veterans, and the broader community.

The Office of Student Veterans Affairs at South Texas College is proud to partner with U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to host a joint Veterans Career Pathways event.

Attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly with agency representatives and gain insight into qualifications, hiring pathways, benefits, and day-to-day life within these organizations.

While the event is being hosted through the Office of Student Veterans Affairs, all students, alumni, and community members are welcome to attend.

We would like to thank our partners at Border Patrol and CBP for their willingness to invest their time in our students and veteran community.

Thank you to Deputy District Director Patrick Roberts for inviting our office to attend today’s quarterly Veterans Advisory Board meeting at Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz’s office.
