We couldn’t agree more!

This is from an interview I did a few years ago with my good friends at @jwpeppermusic. I feel so strongly that singing is the magic bullet, an essential part of any education.

Ready and eager to hear some new singers! Come on!

The colibrí children's choir was founded in 2011 to give area children from many educational backgrounds who love to sing the opportunity to learn and make music together. Children from public, private, parochial, charter, and home schools meet on Sunday afternoons in the McAllen Creative Incubator’s Gallery, 601 N. Main St. (the old McAllen library).

If you have or know kids (first through twelfth grade) that would like to improve their vocal and performance skills, musicianship, and musical independence, AND have Sunday afternoons free, ask them if they’d like to join other hardworking young musicians for fun, challenge, and beautiful music. Our songs are from the folk and classical repertory with occasional pop songs, and have texts in English, Spanish, and usually one or two other languages. As we learn each piece, it is connected to relevant historical and cultural aspects to extend the kids' academic learning. And there are games.

If your child is or will be learning an instrument, consider starting them off singing in a children's choir to develop their intonation, aural comprehension of music notation, musical independence, and attention to timbre and balance. All those can be started in first grade, but fourth grade is not too late!

We're having auditions on the morning of September 6 with our first rehearsal on September 7. If that morning isn't good, we can schedule something before then. Please send a message here on Facebook or to 956.307.6074.

2018 fall colbri promotion Auditions for Fall 2018

Auditions for the colibrí children’s choir will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 9:00 AM to noon at the McAllen Creative Incubator (601 N. Main). No appointment is needed. If that time is not convenient, please send a message requesting a scheduled appointment before our first rehearsal on September 8.

Please note: A $20 registration fee is required to audition, but that will be credited to your first tuition payment. (Payments by cash, check, or Zelle only.)

The colibrí children’s choir is a community, auditioned treble choir for students in grades 1-12. Members are selected based on their aural and vocal potential, desire to sing, ability to learn quickly, and willingness to work hard. Children from public, private, parochial, charter, and home schools meet on Sunday afternoons in the McAllen Creative Incubator’s Gallery, 601 N. Main St. The choir performs at least two concerts each year at the Incubator and has appeared at many local venues including Quinta Mazatlan, the International Festival in Pharr, the annual MLK Celebration at Cine El Rey, the South Texas Irish Fest, and with UTRGV’s opera Carmen, the RGV Ballet’s The Nutcracker, and the McAllen Wind Ensemble’s Christmas Concert at the MPAC.

Our final spring concert is Monday, May 20, 7 PM, at the McAllen Creative Incubator. Come hear our talented and hardworking singers. The concert is free and open to the public.

Tomorrow (Saturday) at 3:30!!!! We’re so excited to be singing again at the South Texas Irish Fest. We have a varied selection of lovely Irish and Irish-American songs in our short program.
