GRACE PROJECT INTERNATIONAL
January 29-31, 2016 in Dallas, Texas

Keynote Speaker: Julio C. Ochoa, Global Philanthropic Consultant.

PRIVATE EVENT: Foundation Board Members
PHILANTHROPIC RETREAT

"EVERYTHING A BOARD MEMBER NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT FUDRAISING"

The role of the board in governing a nonprofit organization cannot be overestimated. The board makes the difference between a good nonprofit and a great one, and can even make or break an organization. Boards are like parents: they need to support, encourage and inspire greatness in their “child” if the organization is to survive and thrive. What happens when the board does not understand its role or embrace it? The nonprofit becomes an “orphan,” unable to secure sufficient funding, attract committed staff and enthusiastic volunteers or reach its potential as a service provider

"PHILANTHROPY IN THE BIBLE"

Fundraising has been around for a very long time. Even biblical heroes like Moses, David, Hezekiah, Nehemiah, Jesus, and Paul asked people to financially support God’s work.

"THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF FUNDRAISING"

Effective fundraising requires sophisticated methods of identifying, cultivating and soliciting potential donors. This course provides an overview of the techniques needed to succeed. Will cover the fundamentals of effective resource development as they pertain to your ministry. Principles and "best practices" of fundraising are studied, including the fundraising process (research, planning, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and evaluation). The principles that undergird effective fundraising practices will also be reviewed including the historical, organizational, legal, ethical, and theoretical contexts of fundraising.

International Conference
FUNDING & PHILANTHROPY
FOR HIGHER EDUCATION IN AFRICA. Lagos, Nigeria, August 17 & 18, 2015,
Speakers: Maria E. Foster, Julio C. Ochoa and David Burgess

By Mr. Julio C. Ochoa

MAJOR GIFT FUNDRAISING: This presentation covers the philosophy and psychology of major gifts in philanthropic activities; strategies for prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and donor stewardship; gifts of non-cash assets; gift acceptance and ethical issues; and managing the major gifts process. The major gifts program focuses on securing high-value gifts from a small number of prospects with the capacity to give at the highest level. Major gifts may be less frequent and require substantial investment in the cultivation and solicitation of the donor, but they are high value and can be transformational for an institution.

THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF FUNDRAISING FOR HIGHER EDUCATION: Effective fundraising requires sophisticated methods of identifying, cultivating and soliciting potential donors. This course provides an overview of the techniques needed to succeed. Will cover the fundamentals of effective resource development as they pertain to Higher Education organizations.

Despite the recent expansion of higher education opportunities worldwide, access to university education remains a significant challenge. Yet, higher education is essential to building the social and economic capital of societies and plays a key role in building a democratic progress. Access to university helps break down social barriers and provides a significant pathway to improved work opportunities and social mobility.

In the past, the philanthropic community has played an important role in opening the path of higher education for students for underprivileged and underserved backgrounds. The many partnerships with corporate, private and Family Foundations for Higher Education in Africa and Foundations such as The Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation are examples of these efforts.

As competition for access to higher education becomes more intense and as tuition costs continue to rise, what can be done to continue to expand and democratize access to university worldwide? What specific role can foundations and the philanthropic community play in that respect? How can foundations help scale up effective academic programs? How can Foundations and Philanthropist provide financial support that aid university infrastructure, scholarship, and research?
