🏆 Celebrating Sean!

We couldn’t be more proud of Transitions student Sean Freiburger, who is this year's recipient of The Arc New York’s Dr. John Kowalczyk Outstanding Citizenship Award!

Sean is the kind of person who notices when someone needs a little encouragement and steps in. At Transitions, he has become a welcoming presence for new students, helping them feel comfortable, connected, and like they belong.

That same spirit carries into the community. Sean serves on the Apraxia Junior Board, volunteers at the Johnstown Food Pantry, and has found meaningful ways to advocate for greater awareness and inclusion. He also made such a positive impression during his work at the Family Counseling Center that the organization created an employment opportunity for him—even though there wasn’t originally a position available.

For us, what makes this honor especially meaningful is seeing how Sean has grown into someone who not only pursues his own goals, but encourages others to find their place and get involved, too.

Congratulations, Sean! We are so proud to have you as part of the Transitions community!

✨ Celebrating Alyssa! ✨

At Transitions, we believe students should be supported to take the lead in their own lives. Alyssa is a great example of what that looks like in action.

As a Peer Mentor at our Albany location, Alyssa takes the time to understand each student — what they’re interested in, what they’re good at and what they want for their future. Then she helps them figure out how to get there.

Sometimes that means providing guidance. Sometimes it means asking the hard questions. And sometimes, it means stepping back and letting the student take the lead.

For Tyler, that support helped him find the confidence to speak up about his future. This summer, he completed a paid internship with the New York State Department of State — an experience that could open the door to future employment.

Alyssa was there to support him along the way, but Tyler was the one doing the work, making decisions and taking those steps forward.

That’s the heart of Transitions: we don’t do things for students — we coach them through it.

We’re so proud to celebrate Alyssa as one of Lexington’s 2026 Employees of the Year and grateful for the way she helps our students build confidence, independence and a vision for what comes next.

Some partnerships change lives.

At Transitions, the relationships students build with mentors, faculty and the campus community can become an important part of their college experience and their confidence in what comes next.

As one Transitions mentor shared, those connections can make students go from wondering “Can I do this?” to realizing they truly belong and can thrive.

That’s one reason we’re so proud to celebrate SUNY Fulton-Montgomery Community College (FMCC) as the recipient of The Arc Lexington’s Community Partner Award at this year’s Lexington’s Night Out Masquerade..

FMCC has been more than a campus for our students. It has been a place where they can learn, build relationships, discover their strengths and see new possibilities for their future.

We’re grateful for a partnership that helps make those possibilities real. ✨

Through the College Track, students attend regional colleges while Transitions helps them select classes, manage assignments, strengthen study habits, and build personalized academic success plans. Learning meets innovation at Transitions!

Students in our Transitions program are using 3D printing technology to design and create custom practice Mah Jongg boards in partnership with the Paul Nigra Center for Creative Arts. This hands-on project gives students the opportunity to apply their creativity, problem-solving, and technical skills through a real-world project.

Experiences like these are what Transitions is all about - building confidence, developing career-ready skills, and creating opportunities to explore business development and entrepreneurship.
