FCHS Ag students in Mrs. Sexton’s classes have been working hard today cleaning up the greenhouse and getting it ready for our fall mum sale coming later in September!

Agriculture education is about more than learning from a textbook. Getting students outside the classroom and giving them the chance to work with their hands teaches responsibility, teamwork, problem solving, and skills they can use long after high school.

There’s still plenty of work to do, but our students are putting in the effort to get the greenhouse ready.

We can’t wait to see our community come out and support our students and all of their hard work at the mum sale this fall!

Plan ahead and purchase your fall porch mums from FCHS Ag! Be on the lookout for a post for when mums arrive and greenhouse hours.

It has been a great start to the the 26-27 school year! One of our FCHS FFA Officers, Hailey, brought in her grandpa’s FFA jacket from the 70’s to share with Mrs. Sexton’s class while studying in our FFA Unit.

He is FCHS FFA Alumni! It was neat to see how the blue corduroy and emblem design changed over the years!

Grades 4-7 Garden Camp is complete and we had a blast!

Students learned about Virginia planting hardiness zones, what to plant and when to plant it for a Spring and Fall harvest, the parts of a plant, components of soil, how to read a seed pouch, the importance of safe handling vegetables and handwashing, how to harvest pepper and tomatoes and all about FFA and opportunities when they get to high school.

A big thank you to the Wythe Bland Foundation for funding this endeavor! Thanks to our FFA Officers that helped as well!

K-3 FCHS FFA Garden Camp was a whole lot of fun!!
Students talked about what all is growing in their gardens at home, learned the parts of the plant, learned about the layers of soil and made soil pudding, planted tomato, pumpkin seeds and wildflowers to take home, painted rocks to put in their gardens at home, learned about food safety and the importance of washing vegetables and their hands, had a delicious lunch and took their Future FFA Member photos! They also walked through our raised beds and picked a few tomatoes and peppers to take home! A big thank you to the FFA Officers that took time from their summer plans to help with the activities today and a big thank you to the Wythe Bland Foundation for funding this Agriculture Enrichment opportunity!

Dairy Day Camp for 4th-7th was a success! Students watched the virtual Mobile Dairy Classroom presentation from Southwest Southland Dairy Farmers, learned about the process of turning cream into butter with the jar method, learned about the history of FFA and made FFA bracelets representing the official colors; National Blue and Corn Gold.

One of our FFA Officers, Hailey, talked about her experiences in Ag Class, competing in CDE’s and becoming an FFA Officer.

Students enjoyed lunch paired with Duchess Dairy milk then made their own ice cream!

They also toured the FCHS Ag building checking out the hydroponics room and Ag Mechanics Lab.

It was a great day! We look forward to our garden camps happening in late July!

A huge thank you to the Wythe Bland Foundation for this opportunity through their grant offerings.
