Before I talk about the season I want to thank all the parents who came out and supported these hard working boys all season. We started prepping and planning for this season last March and as a coaching staff we put many hours in creating an offensive scheme and developing our defense to reflect the skill and abilities of these young men before you. As we all know life does not always go as planned. We our beyond proud of these boys for how they stepped up and filled in roles they may not have been intending to play. Each and every one of them had to step up. We ended the season 3-6, but the resiliency and dedication of these young men will show later in their careers. In 2-4 years when we stand in front of you all again we know that the season record will reflect the battles they overcame this season.
Before we get into the league awards we want to recognize our two seniors. George Barnett finished out an incredible career with multiple deep playoff runs and Allstate and all league honors multiple years. Christian Cimino joined us this year, it being his first time with football, and really improved by the end of it. Thank you seniors for showing up every day and leading this young team on the field.
League awards were released and we have some names to announce:
George Barnett got recognized in two of the hardest positions to be noticed in All League, being selected 2nd team running back and 1st team Linebacker. Since his sophomore year he has been selected 1st or 2nd team for All State. And would have been an All State selection this year as well, if we made the state playoffs. Even with a challenging season Barnett was still able to put up respectable numbers. Such as leading our team to victory against Ione with 12 tackles, 113 yards Receiving, 343 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns. Barnett’s ability to attack and fill on defense, his reliable hands and ability to create yards is special and not something you see in 1A football very often. Since Barnett was an 8th grader he has been getting up at 5am to lift weights 3-5 times a week. If he missed a day, he would make it up in the evening. His dedication to a lifting program over the years is a prime example of what an athlete can do when they put the work in off the field.
Lincoln Delco also got recognized in two different categories as honorable mention defensive end and 2nd team offensive linemen. Lincoln was one of the hardest working guys on the team. Having to battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball and we relied on him a lot. Lincoln always showed up with 110% effort and no complaints. Keep working Lincoln and good job!
And our last player to be recognized is Sawyer Brown earning all-league honorable mention quarterback. Being a starting qb as a sophomore is not an easy thing to do and he impressed the whole coaching staff with how he stepped up and continued to improve every aspect of his game. And while he was improving on the field, he was also starting to fill a leadership role as well. Congrats Sawyer!
I hope everyone had a fun experience this season. We are excited about what the future holds for this young group. Thank you again to everyone who came to support and cheer on the Redsides. Good luck in basketball and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
