I am running for the Maumee Board of Education because I believe in the transformative power of education and its vital role in shaping our children's future.

With my unique qualifications as a librarian, administrator, mother, and long-time resident, I bring a diverse perspective and a deep understanding of the needs of our community. Throughout my years of service, I have dedicated my time and energy to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, and I am committed to ensuring every student receives a quality education that prepares them for success in an ever-changing world.

I’m running to provide the best possible education and learning environment for all Maumee kids.

I’m running as a mom who has firsthand experience with the complexities of modern parenthood.

I’m running as a librarian with the professional and educational background to support and understand the teachers’ expertise and student needs.

Our educators are already doing the hard work to prepare our kids for a rapidly changing future. I’m running to keep Maumee Schools strong and to help us reach even greater levels of success.

A vote for me on Nov. 7th is a vote for someone with skin in the game and a long, demonstrated history of working hard for Maumee.

Last night was amazing and humbling. To be included amongst the 19 other people working for our community (and beyond!) in such incredible ways was surreal. Thank you to those who nominated me and those who support me and our family everyday. I couldn’t do any of this without you.

I don’t work as hard as I do for the accolades; I work to put my values into action. However, I would be lying if I said the recognition wasn’t meaningful.

Thank you, 20 Under 40 Toledo and to everyone who has reached out with their kind words and congrats. I promise to bring this level of dedication to the Maumee School Board everyday.

There's been a lot of attention on candidates this week, so I want to take a moment to introduce myself again.

My name is Allison, and I am running for MCS School Board.

I'm a Maumee Schools grad, Maumee Schools parent, and public librarian. I currently work in administration at my library as the Adult Services Coordinator, a position requiring me to oversee work across the county and many locations.

I have spent much of my adult life serving the Maumee community in various ways, including as the past President of the Maumee Uptown Business Association and currently as a member of several City of Maumee boards and commissions. I am also a Panther Pride Foundation board member and Maumee City Schools Strategic Plan Core Team member.

I hold a Master of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University. My degree work was dual-focused on library management and administration and children's and young adult literature.

As I mentioned at the forum, I believe pandemic learning slide, bullying, social media, and mental health are the defining challenges of the current generation of students. As a parent, I am invested in working towards solutions to these problems that prioritize students of all backgrounds. We need board members with real-world experience in complex problem-solving, and my work and service experience have provided me just that.

I just have to share some amazing numbers from the MCS board meeting tonight:

In the 2022-23 school year-

212 students took 479 College Credit Plus courses right at Maumee High School, totaling 1506 semester credits.

An additional 25 students took a total of 71 College Credit Plus courses online or in person at BGSU, Owens, or UT.

The average cost of a credit hour at a four-year public, in-state college (as of June 2023) is $456. That means that last school year alone, Maumee City Schools provided the equivalent of $250,800 in free college courses to students.

And this is just one avenue to prepare kids for their careers. At the board meeting, educators also discussed the varied curriculum that exists (and is being developed) to connect students with apprenticeships and certifications so they are graduating high school into a career field that needs them and has jobs waiting.

Numbers don’t lie. This is a school system that is working to prepare students for future success, and doesn’t assume that success is only a four year degree. We are privileged to send our kids to a school system that sees varied paths to build a future and is willing to meet students where they are.

I’m running for school board to keep this momentum going and to help push us to the next level of student and graduate success.

Have you collected your buckeyes yet?

In a truly inspired act of partnership, Maumee City Schools and City of Maumee officials have teamed up to get a tree into the hands of every middle and intermediate school student to help meet the goal of increasing the tree canopy in the city by 10 percent in 10 years.

Kids are encouraged to gather red buckeyes, black walnuts, red maple seeds, and more with the hopes of collecting 3,000 seeds to be sent to Toledo Botanical Gardens, where they will start growing them in a greenhouse and then redistribute them to students in the spring.

Teaching kids how to impact their community through action is exactly the kind of learning that builds strong civic engagement and creates future leaders.

MCS and the city have taken a problem and turned it into a practical opportunity for students to make an impact on their environment. It’s this type of value-added education that inspired me to run for school board. I’m running to support the people doing the hard work that extends curriculum into the lives of students in tangible ways.

Seeds can be turned in until 3PM on Friday 9/29 at Maumee Middle School.
