🔷🔶🔷The Golden Opportunity Scholarship is opening soon for nominations through Phi Theta Kappa! This scholarship fee waiver is designed to increase access to the benefits of membership by helping students pay for membership. This fee waiver puts membership within reach for 300 college students per award period, thanks to the generosity of Phi Theta Kappa advisors, members, alumni, donors, and friends. This fee waiver decreases the membership cost by $60, but it is not applicable to those who have accepted their membership already.

We are only able to select 3 nominees! If you have any financial concerns or restrictions that may prevent you from joining PTK, please email us. We are more than happy to place you on the nominations list for consideration. The window opens September 2nd and recipients are chosen starting September 30th.

We hope your summer has been treating you well so far! We’ve still been thinking about the last big celebration that sends so many off to summer each year—graduation!

Thirty years before the Class of 2026 crossed the stage, the Class of 1996 celebrated the same milestone at Lake Land College. Thanks to photographs preserved in the archives, those moments can still be revisited today. Although much has changed, graduation continues to represent years of hard work, new opportunities, and the excitement of what comes next.

As we continue working through materials in the Lake Land College archives for our Phi Theta Kappa project, it has been interesting to come across moments that reflect how much the college has changed over time. One clipping from 1983 announced Lake Land’s purchase of its first “microcomputers” through a $125,000 agreement that would help expand computer access across the college and local school districts.

At the time, the article described plans for computer labs, instructional programs, and a “computer-sharing consortium” designed to help students and educators prepare for emerging technologies. College leaders recognized that computers were becoming increasingly important in both education and the workplace, emphasizing the need for students to develop the “new skills necessary to meet the challenge of new technologies.”

More than 40 years later, many of the goals outlined in the article remain visible in student life at Lake Land today. What once began with a small number of microcomputers and printers has expanded into online and HyFlex courses, laptop rentals through the library, virtual learning resources, and technology that allows students to complete coursework both on campus and remotely.

Looking back at this clipping provides an interesting snapshot of a moment when computer technology was still relatively new, while also showing how Lake Land has continued adapting its resources and services to meet changing student needs over the decades.

All officer positions for next academic year are open!

We will be holding the election at the beginning of Fall semester at one of our all member meetings. Reminder that our all member meetings are every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month! Officers also meet for officer meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday.

President- Lead meetings, collaborate with project leads to delegate responsibilities, and serve as the lead for the College Project

Vice President- Support President and lead Honors in Action

Secretary- Take detailed minutes and plan social events + co-lead on Honors in Action

Treasurer- Collect dues, keep financial records, and lead the biannual fundraisers

Public Relations- Post about events and encourage students to join + co-lead on College Project

Arts and Education

In the wake of the 2026 Lake Land Spring Art Show, there’s plenty of reminiscing to be had over past events. From the art displays of the Neal Hall building to the coloring pages, Lake Land has fostered a welcoming environment towards the arts since its conception. Whether it be for students, staff, or community members, these displays provide an opportunity to present all areas of talent.

Art has also served other purposes. In the leftmost picture below, students are shown holding their pieces in class, a way to express their concern over the tragic events of 9/11. Themed projects like these are common to this day, with many creative works being shown off in Neal Hall’s east entrance. Looking back several decades, similar grouped displays occurred, like sculpture shows held in the Lake Land library (top right).

Contrary to a single idea, the art show brings all walks of art to its collection; sculptures, paintings, literature and more! As a community-wide event, it brings together members and non-members of the Laker family and provides a fantastic way to explore the arts. Shown below are two winners from the 2001 Art Heritage Show. In first place, Joseph Ishibashi of Mattoon (bottom left), and in second place, Lucy Probst of Sigel (right). Twenty five years later, a talented new group of individuals are proud to be called winners of the 2026 Spring Art Show. Pictured in the bottom is the winner of the Best Employee Writing Piece, Breanna Moore (left), and the winner of the Best Employee Audio and Video Art Piece, Bells Kegerreis (right).
