Caribbean Reef at Lakeland College

Caribbean Reef at Lakeland College A 75 gallon marine ecosystem to give students a visual on how all parts of nature work together to thrive. Hello, I am creating a Caribbean Reef ecosystem.

My research has included information on the components of sea water, how to set up a 75 gallon tank, the creatures of the Caribbean, and much more.

Garrett has taken over the tank. How does it look!?

Today was a successful day. Added hammer coral, mini maxi anemone, xenia, zoas, peppermint shrimp, blue leg hermit crabs, and ultra vietnam mushrooms. Also set up a 10 gallon to start growing macro algae in the store room for the tang. First coat of paint on half of the new stand door today and plan on finishing Friday!

If any of you go by the tank tomorrow, you will notice that the main door to the stand has been removed. That is because I am redoing that part of the stand to allow for easier maintenance. Come check it out soon! The bulbs were changed Friday night so it is much brighter and all of the corals seem much happier. Nothing like a good water change and spruce up to end the summer semester!!

Canister filter has been replaced and changing bulbs, filter socks, and a water change all scheduled for tonight. Should look pretty awesome on Monday!

Upgrades just around the corner! New canister filter just came in, design of the new front panel in progress, new book to give you all more information about the tank also in progress, and the most exciting update will be the addition of more creatures next week!

Water change complete and hoping to get some more coral for the right side of the tank. I am thinking more zoanthids or maybe some plate corals.

03/30/2012

Added 10 Nasarrius snails, 10 blue leg hermits, and a yellow tang on Monday. Check it out!

Attempting to destroy the hair algae. This is a prime example on how not having conditions perfect in an ecosystem can lead to one organism overtaking everything else.

Water change done yesterday and now to begin improving the information board.

03/05/2012

Water change tomorrow between class and Midterm exam at 2!

I gave another presentation on the Caribbean Reef to Ms. Lucinda Horton's 8 am class last Friday. Went swimmingly! I am getting the hang of this presentation thing :) Anyone have any questions about the tank? I would be happy to answer them for you, or can give you a live presentation for a class or group.
