🥁 **A harder marching show isn’t always a better marching show.**

One of the biggest parts of designing a successful show is knowing **what your students can realistically achieve by the end of the season.**

Great design should challenge performers — but it should also give them the opportunity to:

✅ Play with confidence
✅ March with clarity
✅ Develop throughout the season
✅ Perform instead of simply survive
✅ Peak when it matters most

Sometimes simplifying a transition, adjusting staging, or changing a few counts can make a HUGE difference in how a band looks **and sounds**.

At **CK Marching Services**, I design with the performers in mind — creating drill, music, and visual moments that fit the ensemble while still pushing students toward the next level.

**Design for the band you have. Build toward the band they can become.**

🎵 **DRILL DESIGN PRO TIP: Write for the Sound, Too!** 🎵

Great drill shouldn't just **look good** — it should help the ensemble **sound good**.

One thing I consider when writing drill is **layering and performer spacing**.

When musicians are placed directly behind one another in tight, straight lines, their sound can be partially blocked by the performers in front of them. Depending on the instrumentation and staging, this can affect projection and clarity from the audience's perspective.

At **CK Marching Services**, I take this into account when designing forms and transitions. Strategic layering, spacing, and staging can:

🎶 Give performers more open space to project
🎶 Improve clarity across instrumental sections
🎶 Help important musical voices reach the audience
🎶 Maintain strong visual forms without sacrificing sound

💡 **Pro Tip:** Already have drill with stacked straight lines? Try incorporating body or upper-body visuals that **offset performers from the person directly in front of them** during important musical moments. Even a small visual adjustment can open the form while adding visual interest.

**Drill isn't separate from the music — it should help the music succeed.**

That's part of my approach at **CK Marching Services:** writing drill with the complete performance in mind.

🥁 A marching band show doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective.

Sometimes the most effective moments on the field are also the simplest.

A clear musical phrase.
A strong visual idea.
A well-timed impact.
Students performing confidently.

It can be tempting to keep adding more—more layers, more movement, more effects, more concepts—but clarity matters.

When designing or teaching a marching production, I like to ask:

👉 Does this help communicate the music?
👉 Can the students perform it successfully?
👉 Will the audience understand the moment?
👉 Does it make the ensemble look and sound better?

If the answer is yes, sometimes you already have everything you need.

Good design gives students the opportunity to be successful. Great performance makes the design come alive.

Illinois Marching Band Directors & Event Hosts — 2026 Adjudicator Availability

CK Marching Services has availability for select marching band contests, festivals, and other adjudicated events throughout Illinois.

With more than 25 years in the marching arts, I have experience adjudicating Music, Visual, Percussion, Drum Major, and General Effect, including both individual and ensemble captions.

My adjudication philosophy is simple: evaluate the program and performance that is actually in front of me.

Every band has different students, resources, goals, traditions, and design approaches. My role as an adjudicator isn't to redesign a director's show or tell a program what style it should be. It's to evaluate how successfully the performers communicate and achieve the musical, visual, and effect responsibilities of the production they've chosen.

A rock show can be a great rock show. A Latin production doesn't need an elaborate storyline to be successful. Sections don't need to be integrated simply because that's currently popular. If the design makes sense, the performers communicate it, and the musical and visual achievement is there, that deserves to be recognized.

I also approach every recording knowing that students are listening too. Feedback should identify achievement, explain opportunities for growth, and give performers and directors useful information they can apply at their next rehearsal.

My goal is for directors to finish listening to my commentary feeling that their students were fairly evaluated, respected, and given useful educational feedback—regardless of program size, competitive class, show style, or philosophy.

If your Illinois event is still looking for adjudicators for the 2026 season, I'd be glad to discuss availability.

I especially like this positioning for you because it distinguishes you without saying “other judges have agendas” or “judges are pushing their brands.” A contest host reading it can infer the difference.

One other phrase you could eventually make part of your adjudication branding is:

“Evaluate. Educate. Respect the Intent.”

That's short enough for graphics, your website's adjudication page, emails to contest hosts, and even the header of an adjudicator bio.

Doing something that I truly love.

The late nights, long hours, and countless revisions are all worth it when I get to help marching band programs bring their vision to life on the field.

Every program has a different goal—and that's what I enjoy most. Some bands want to create an entertaining show that their community will remember. Others are chasing championship performances. Whether it's music arranging, drill design, visual coordination, percussion, or on-field consulting, I love helping directors and students reach their definition of success.

I'm grateful to work with programs of all sizes and competitive levels throughout the United States, collaborating with incredible directors and staff to create performances that students can be proud of.

As band camps continue and the 2026 marching season gets underway, I want to wish every marching band, director, staff member, parent, and student the very best of luck. Your hard work, dedication, and passion are about to come to life on the field!

Here's to an amazing season filled with growth, unforgettable performances, and memories that will last a lifetime.

If your program needs assistance with:

Good luck to every marching band, drumline, color guard, drum major, and band staff across the United States as band camps get underway!

Band camp is where championships begin—not on the competition field, but through the countless hours of hard work, dedication, teamwork, and perseverance that happen long before the first performance.

To every student:
🎵 Learn something new every day.
🥁 Push yourself beyond your comfort zone.
🎺 Encourage those around you.
📖 Trust the process.
💪 Remember that every rep matters.

To every director and staff member:
Thank you for the countless hours you invest in creating life-changing experiences for your students. Your leadership, patience, and passion make a lasting impact that extends far beyond the marching season.

Wishing every program a safe, productive, and memorable camp. I can't wait to see all of the incredible performances, creative productions, and amazing growth throughout the 2026 season.

Another incredible week of marching band camps is in the books! 🎶🏈

It has been a privilege working with the outstanding students and directors in **Mattoon** and **Arcola** as they continue preparing for an exciting 2026 marching season. The dedication, work ethic, and positive attitudes these students bring to every rehearsal are inspiring.

As July comes to a close, congratulations to every student across the United States who made the decision to be part of their school's marching band. The hours are long, the rehearsals can be challenging, and the summer heat is no joke—but the rewards are worth it.

Marching band teaches so much more than music:

One of my favorite parts of the marching season is when directors and staff send me photos and videos of their band's progress!

There's something incredibly rewarding about watching ideas that started as notes on paper come to life on the field. Seeing students bring the music, drill, visuals, and performance together reminds me why I love what I do.

Every program has its own personality, goals, and challenges, and it's a privilege to help bands across the country create shows that fit their students and showcase their strengths.

Thank you to all the directors, staff, and students who keep me updated throughout the season. I can't wait to see how each of these productions continues to grow over the next several weeks!

Best of luck to every marching band as camps continue and the 2026 season gets closer. Keep working hard—you'll be amazed how much progress can happen one rehearsal at a time!

🎶 Another Week of Camps! 🎶

Marching band season is officially in full swing!

This week I'll be spending time with the MHS Pride of the Greenwave during music camp and helping the Arcola Purple Riders bring their 2026 competitive production to life during drill camp. It's always exciting to watch a show take shape as the music, drill, and visuals begin coming together.

Beyond camps, I'm continuing to write music, drill, and visual design while supporting marching band programs across the United States. Every school has its own unique goals, traditions, and style, and it's a privilege to help students and directors create memorable performances.

Best of luck to every student, director, staff member, and volunteer working hard at camps this week. The long rehearsals, countless reps, and attention to detail will pay off when the season begins in just a few short weeks!

Here's to another great week of learning, growing, and making music. Let's have an amazing marching season! 🎺🥁🎷🏳️
