Mattoon CUSD #2 is excited to announce the hiring of Heath Uppencamp as the new Head Baseball Coach at Mattoon High School. A longtime Mattoon resident and coach, Uppencamp brings extensive baseball experience and a deep understanding of the Mattoon community to his new role with the Greenwave baseball program. 🎉

Uppencamp said he is excited for the opportunity to lead the program and build on the foundation already in place.“I could not be more excited about the opportunity to lead our baseball program. We will set high expectations for the kids, and I know that we have the talent and work ethic to reach those expectations. I am thankful for all of the support that I have already received from members of the community, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the field!" ⚾

The Mattoon High School Cross Country team traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio, to compete in the 2026 Cincinnatus Track Fest on August 8 and came away with several strong performances, personal records, and a new team record!

A few highlights:

🥇 Cam Hedges — 1st in the Open Mile with a 5:06.37 PR
🔥 Jackson Good — 800M PR with a time of 2:13.57
👏 Nolan Weaver — 3200M PR
💪 Colton Blair — Summer PR in the Open 5K
🏃‍♂️ 4×400 Relay — Peyton Fletcher, Jackson Good, Ryland Decker & Ethan Vice finished 4th with a new team PR!

And after all their hard work on the track, the team enjoyed a well-earned day together at Kings Island! 🎢

What a great summer! MHS Youth Mini Sports Camps gave Mattoon students entering 3rd through 8th grade the opportunity to learn, participate, and have fun across 12 different sports, including:

MHS Cheer invites kindergarten–5th grade students to join the annual MHS Cheer Kiddie Camp! Campers will learn cheers and perform alongside the MHS Cheer Team during the first quarter of the football game on Friday, September 11! 📣

💰 Cost: $30
📍 Practice: Thursday, Sept. 10 at MHS North Gym
• K–2nd Grade: 5:30–6:15 p.m.
• 3rd–5th Grade: 6:45–7:45 p.m.

🏈 Performance: Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.
📍 MHS Football Field
Campers will cheer during the first quarter and will be released to parents afterward. Campers get into the game FREE!

📝 Registration: Download the registration form at the link below and return the completed form and $30 payment by Tuesday, September 1, 2026 to receive a T-shirt and bow.
