Smiles Galore as Massapequa Students Head Back to School

The doors to Massapequa’s nine schools opened up on Sept. 2, with nearly 6,000 students walking through. It was the first day of school for grades 1-12 following two months of summer vacation.

Just 24 hours later, the district’s youngest learners arrived, continuing a Massapequa School District tradition of having the first full day of kindergarten on the second day of school year. With 579 kindergartners arriving at six elementary schools, it was all hands on deck. Administrators, teachers and support staff came together to make sure kindergartners found their way from the walker and busser entrances to their new classrooms.

Buildings were decorated with balloons, welcome back signs and fresh bulletin boards. The floors were shiny, desks were neatly arranged and bells toned right on time. Massapequa High School students got a glimpse of the revamped gymnasium lobby that captures Chief pride through decaled walls, while a few dozen Birch Lane students settled into newly renovated classrooms.

“A successful opening truly takes a team effort, and Massapequa is the team of teams,” Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said. “As I visited our schools throughout the first two days, what stood out most were the smiles, positive energy and genuine passion throughout.”

The 2026-27 school year is officially underway in Massapequa!

Teachers and staff from across the district gathered at Massapequa High School for Superintendent’s Conference Day, where they were welcomed with inspiring performances by talented student musicians and choir members.

Superintendent Dr. William Brennan introduced this year’s theme, “The Leader Within: Driven by Purpose, Inspired to Act, Lifting Others,” emphasizing the important role every staff member plays in supporting student success. “I know that every single day in your classrooms, across our schools and in this great organization, the amount of things that are happening for the kids is just remarkable,” Dr. Brennan said.

Speakers, including Board of Education President Kerry Wachter, district leaders, PTA representatives, student board members Antonio DelMaestro and Melissa Stalzer and Malcolm Gilbert, the teachers’ union president, reflected on the shared purpose that unites the Massapequa community: putting students first. As we begin a new school year, we thank our educators, staff, and facilities team for their dedication and commitment to creating outstanding opportunities for every student. 💙💛

Berner Middle School opened its doors to all incoming sixth, seventh and eighth graders for Tour the Schedule. Students were able to walk the building to find their class locations for 2026-2027 school year.

As they arrived in the auditorium lobby, sixth graders were provided with locks for their hallway lockers. Many of Berner's newest students were helped out by older siblings who guided them through the school. Several teachers also were stationed throughout the halls to answer questions and point students in the right direction.

The school year for Massapequa students in grades 1-12 begins on Wednesday, Sept. 2, followed by the first day of kindergarten on Thursday, Sept. 3.
