I recently ran across this charming little waltz by Mozart written when he was only 5 years old. It’s called “Das Butterbrot” meaning “bread and butter.” He instructs the performer to play the right hand using only the index finger, which mimics a knife spreading butter on the bread. Mozart’s early genius meets his childhood musical sense of humor. I love it! I gotta have at least one student play this piece this year.
