We don’t do season awards.

Best player? Best play? Best team? Best game? We can’t because we don’t see every game or every team. That wouldn’t be fair.

But what we do is celebrate moments.

What were the best moments? That’s different to each of you. Your kid. Your team. Your memory.

What were my favorite memories of the past year?

Now that’s a question I can answer…

…showing up to Dansville football and watching them lose. Then watching again and they lost again. I wanted to be there so badly to see them break the winless streak. Then with the last game of the season we decided to make it our game of the week. Win or lose we were going to celebrate. Then as the game wound down and the realization set in that they were going to win my friend turned to me in the broadcast booth and said to me “…this is like being in a movie” because it was. Hollywood couldn’t have recreated that feeling. Not in any ending imagineable.

…watching the pure eruption of elation from a Lansing Catholic girls 4x400 team reach a mark that they believed in but was not something they truly believed was possible. Until it was. The sound they made when they realized their time was one Ill never forget.

…watching a pole vaulter in Grand Ledge lunge as high as she could go higher than any girl could but falling just short…the look on her face in that moment was not a look of failure but one of inevitability. Because it was.

…being in the hottest basketball gym both literally and figuratively to watch the best rivals in all the land go at each other one more time. Where Mr. Basketball took on the hometown Warriors in the loudest gym I’d been in. It wasn’t the score. Or the players. Or the moments of the game. It was the atmosphere that was unforgettable.

…the night I listened to an Eastern soccer player practically beg his coach for the postgame interview. Which he got. And as he beamed in front of my camera a star was born. Ended up being one of the most viewed videos of the year.

…the realization in her eyes as we walked off the lacrosse field. One of my childrens last teammates. A player who I have watched grow as a teammate, classmate and superstar. It was the look in her eyes when I said “…I don’t think I’ll see you again after this”. Four years and a million moments closed in that memory. Bittersweet, but unmistakably memorable.

Now as I try to pick out my favorites the memories start to blur as if spun on a wheel. The trophies. The hugs. The beaming parents. The tangled cords. The hoarse throat but one remains above all else…

…the Diamond Classic.

Theres a backstory to our Classic broadcasts this year that isn’t public. I wasn’t supposed to be there. The Herald wasn’t supposed to be there. But as fate would have it I was. And what I got to be a part of was such a culmination of emotions.

Mason embraced the Herald when I first created it. Not many schools did. I was there with a microphone postgame when no one else bothered. Then the football glory years took hold and we went all the way to Ford Field together. And back again and again over and over from soccer to basketball to track to baseball to the ice rink and on and on. Mason Mason Mason. I oft joke with Mrs. The Lansing Herald that I swear all our backroads roads must lead to Mason.

So here I was back upstairs again at MSU for the Diamond Classic. And down on the field below me was Mason.

The Bulldogs won and then won again. Then after the final out of the final game they stood as first time champions.

Forever etched in history.

When I packed up the equipment I stopped just to watch the scene below me. There were almost no broadcasts of the Diamond Classic this year and by golly would I have been broken hearted if I missed this moment. I had to be there. Correction. I got to be there. So there at the end I breathed a deep sigh of gratitude because, as it often does I was put in the place where I was supposed to be.

For all the memories.

…and I can’t wait to start anew because who knows what story will unfold.

Life is good.
And I will see you soon.
