To make quick money, the industry invents “solutions” that act as slow-motion wrecking balls on solid-wall properties.
⁃ The Insulation Trap: Brand-new insulation systems are constantly designed without proper testing in traditional building environments. When applied to solid walls, they choke the building, trapping moisture and rotting the fabric from the inside out.
⁃ The Resin Failure: Rigid resins are routinely specified for structural repairs on highly porous stone. Because they’re vapour-impermeable, they create a hard barrier. The natural stone breathes, expands and contracts around it, causing catastrophic erosion until the entire repair fails.
🧪 Step 3: The Merchant Shortcuts (The Chemical Illusion)
To boost speed and profit, builders often resort to Natural Hydraulic Limes (NHLs), chemical accelerators or modern pre-mixes, which mimic the properties of cement. These quick-setting options allow builders to leave quickly, but they’re a ticking time bomb.
⁃ The “Lean” Pre-Mix Scam: Packaged pre-mixes are often incredibly low in lime, yet sold wet to appear workable. Once applied, they rapidly dry due to insufficient free lime content to retain moisture.
⁃ The Hidden Collapse: This rapid drying halts the chemical process of carbonation. The failure is invisible on Day 1 when the builder collects payment. It only becomes apparent months later when nails fail or a leaking gutter washes away the uncarbonated sand.
⁃ The Dead Powder Trap: Dry-mixed bags of hydrated lime absorb moisture and CO2 from the air as soon as they’re bagged, often sitting in damp merchant yards or the back of a van. By the time it reaches the mixer, a significant portion has already carbonated inside the bag. You’re essentially applying historic limestone dust to a building.
⁃ Water-Logged Putty: Even pure lime putty is often over-saturated with water by merchants to artificially inflate the weight on scales and increase charges for water.
