We’re excited to welcome you back for our annual August public sale days at Wildtype Native Plant Nursery! Shopping will be by appointment only on Thursday and Friday to keep your experience enjoyable and uncrowded. No appointment is needed on Saturday.

We would describe Gina’s role around here as command and control. For the past 17 years Gina has been at the center of managing orders, nursery production and quality control, and much more. If you have ever called or emailed us, you have communicated directly with Gina. I am getting exhausted just writing this describing what she does around here. Thank you, Gina.

Wildtype is an ecologically focused native plant nursery and environmental contractor looking to fill a nursery position for the remainder of this season. This is full-time position that start as soon as possible and runs through fall. Part-time employment will also be considered.

This position involves transplanting, watering, weeding, and preparing orders for pickup and delivery.

Wildtype Native Plant Nursery grows wildflowers, grasses, trees and shrubs native to Michigan. We provide ecological services including invasive species management, botanical surveys, native plant installation, and native landscaping.

We are often asked why we do not grow certain species. There are several reasons but most fall into one or more of these categories:

Difficultly collecting the seed.

Difficultly getting the seed to germinate.

Slow to mature.

Not easily cultivated or reintroduced to the environment.

No one is interested in buying it.

What are some native plants you wish you could find?

This photo captures a few species we grow and don’t grow. We grow woodland phlox and Virginia creeper but not the dwarf lake iris...........or the poison ivy. Thank you, Bob Domm, for lending us this photo.

Dan is celebrating 25 years at Wildtype. He wears many unofficial hats including being chief propagator, one of the field leaders and best botanist on staff. Dan brings together horticulture, botany and ecology which describes exactly what we strive to do here. Among Dan’s many talents is his photographic memory for where things are in the nursery - a remarkable feat when there are over 300,000 plants in the nursery on any given day. Thank you, Dan.
