What has Sensation Education 2 been up to this Summer?
Though many of our students take the summer off, Sensation Education 2’s staff remains hard at work!! We are excited to share NEW things coming this Fall!!
Our Orton-Gillingham and Dyslexia Specialist, Mrs. Tonya and Orton-Gillingham and Intervention Specialist Mrs. Temp have collectively spent over 200 hours studying the science of writing and developing a writing program to come alongside our existing Orton-Gillingham methodology. When writing is aligned with existing content, it aids in the learning process and allows students to absorb and retain information at a higher level. Our comprehensive sequence of writing will begin at the basic sentence level and progress to paragraphs/multi-paragraphs. Our intermediate level of writing will take a deep dive into writing complex sentences, note-taking skills, summarizing, and writing 5 paragraph essays!! Writing assessments, lessons, and content were designed based on the research in The Writing Revolution (an excellent read for anyone looking to better themselves as a writing teacher) .
Our Orton-Gillingham teacher, Mrs. Hali has spent countless hours developing review games and fluency passages to go along with our Red Word Instruction and provide students the needed review and practice to experience success. A Red Word is a word that is irregular in spelling pattern (it doesn’t follow the rules). Students often need 50-110 successful exposures to an irregular word to commit it to the long term memory. So, you’ve guessed it…..practice and repetition is key!!!!
Our Speech and Language Pathologist, Mrs. Amy made the transition from the public sector of teaching to private. She will be spending three days a week at Sensation Education 2! She has spent the summer decorating her new space and filling it with the tools needed to provide our students with effective and engaging speech services.
Our occupational therapist, Mrs. Jen has been diving deeper and continuing her coursework in cranial sacral therapy. Craniosacral Therapy benefits our students in that it reduces tension patterns around the ears and eyes. In doing so, the regions of the brain responsible for processing language and other information, functions more successfully.
Our virtual certified Orton-Gillingham teacher, Mrs. Stpehanie has been studying David Kilpatrick’s book, Equipped for Reading Success. Equipped for Reading Success uses a developmentally appropriate approach designed to boost phoneme awareness, phonics, and instant word recognition.
Orton-Gillingham Specialist, Mrs. Terri has spent the summer sharing her love for The Science of Reading with other educators!! She has been leading professional development and teaching teachers how to implement the Orton-Gillingham Methodology.
