Reflections on the past 60 years

We have seen a lot of change. A lot of wonderful unimaginable things. Since we have graduated, the world has changed in so many ways.

We’ve landed on the moon, have multiple satellites circling the earth for weather & communication and a giant International Space Station is circling the earth.

Most of us have personal computers, smart phones, digital cameras, microwaves. We’ve had 8 tracks, cassettes, VCR’s and DVD. And now we stream! Our TVs are supersized.

The internet, Google, WIFI, FB, Tick Toc, the Cloud, iPad, GPS, 3 D Printing, LED lighting, solar farms, Hybrids, electric cars, Airbnb, AED’s, CPR, and AI would all have sounded like gibberish and would not have made any sense to us in 1965. Apple Watches are something out of Dick Tracey or Star Trek.

We have had major improvements in medicine. Rather than exploratory operations, we have MRI, CT. PET scans. Operations are done by robotic arms. Hip and knee replacements are common. Heart surgery, valve replacements, pacemakers have been lifesaving. Instead of glasses we have contacts and laser surgery. No telling what AI can mean for more medical discoveries.

ATM’s Walmart, Amazon. eBay, Uber, Door Dash are unknown in 1965 and have changed the way we do business & shop.
Socially we seen the Civil Rights movement, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Title 9.

Seat belts usage is now a habit. Back up cameras, air bags and collision avoidance systems are what we look for in our cars.

Less people smoke, even alcohol consumption is down. Healthy eating is now a focus. Food, water and air monitoring and safety is a thing. We use sunscreen instead of baby oil.

So many more important positive things have changed since we’ve graduated. It would be difficult to list them all.

But as you’ve noticed, I’ve focused on the positive changes. We need to be aware of the adverse events that have happened and are happening, but the positive will get us through trying times.
And unfortunately, there will be more trying times for all of us.

So, live each day with the positive foremost in your mind.
Love those near and dear to you.
Explore the world…or the neighborhood.
Make a difference in the lives of your family, your grands and maybe great grands, your neighborhood, and your community. Try volunteering…in your community, church or school.
Keep learning. Keep moving. Keep laughing.
Challenge Yourself.

Don’t say you’re too old. Be cautious but be bold and adventuresome.
Remember we are Baby Boomers, and we were going to change the world. It's never too late to make a difference.

Keep making that change, even as we approach another incredible milestone of 80 years.

Allen McBride gave a short speech at our Reunion about how young and naïve we were in 1965, but how we need to make the best of life as it is now.
He read an article about Helen Mirren.

From The Times: When Helen Mirren turned 80 this year, she was asked if the experience was what she expected. She replied. You know, my mum said something very wise to me many years ago. She said ”Never be afraid of getting older. An amazing thing happens. When you’re 18, the thought of being 35 is horrific. And when you get to 35, it’s actually a lot better than being 18. And when you’re 35, the thought of 55 is horrific. Then you it 55, and you realize there are great things about being 55. Your life has moved on, you lose certain stuff, but you gain other stuff.”
So we need to focus on the good stuff!
