Soaring into the new season!✨

We can’t wait to welcome our dancers back to the studio as we officially begin the 2026–2027 Season! We are especially excited to welcome 75 brand-new students to the VMSD family this year🤍

As we begin our 69th year of dancing at Van Metre School of Dance, we are so excited for all of the classes, friendships, growth, and memories ahead!

Be sure to tag us in your photos and stories for our first week back to classes! We would love to celebrate the start of the new season with you!📸✨

Pt. 3: THE REVEAL | Building Our New Floors🩰✨

The wait is over! Take a look inside our stunning updated studios and lobbies🤩

Our brand-new sprung floors are officially complete! Built layer by layer to provide the support, cushioning, and shock absorption our dancers need, these floors were truly a labor of love. Another HUGE thank you to Mr. James for the incredible amount of time, thought, skill, and hard work he poured into this project. From planning every detail to building the floors himself, we are beyond grateful for everything he did to make these beautiful new studios possible!🤍

Fun fact: the old floors in our downstairs studios sat approximately 4 inches higher than the new floors do now! That extra height makes the studios feel even bigger, brighter, and more open✨

We also gave both of our lobbies a fresh new look, with updated details throughout to make VMSD feel even more welcoming as we head into the new season!

We also couldn’t have completed all of our summer updates without some wonderful helping hands. A huge thank you to David’s Abbey, Harlequin Floors, Ms. Amy, Mr. Jack, and Ms. Laura. And to our friends Matthew & Roger for all of your help throughout the summer. It truly took a team!

And the timing couldn’t be more perfect… tomorrow we kick off the 2026–2027 Season and welcome 75 brand-new students to VMSD!🤩 We cannot wait to fill these studios with dancing, laughter, hard work, friendships, and so many new memories.

Pt. 2: LAYER BY LAYER | Building Our New Floors🩰✨

There’s a lot more underneath a dance floor than you might think…👀💪

Part 2 of our downstairs studio transformation was all about building the floor layer by layer—from v***r barriers and foam blocks to subfloors, birch, drilling, spacing, filling, sanding, and smoothing. Every layer helps create a safer, stronger, more supportive floor for our dancers!

924 foam blocks. 36 subfloor panels. 36 birch panels. 1,700 screws. Approximately 214 hours later (🤯) and our beautiful new floors are complete!

Mr. James is remarkable. He truly went above and beyond to build these floors for our dancers, and we are incredibly grateful for all of the time, care, and hard work he put into them. And Ms. Laura loved being his official Subfloor Sidekick along the way🤪

Next up: THE REVEAL! We also did a little painting and added some new touches to the studios…just wait until you see them🤩✨ . .

Pt. 1: DEMOLITION | Building Our New Floors🩰✨

Did you know that the day our Intermediate Ballet Intensive ended, we jumped right into construction on our downstairs ballet studios?!

Part 1 of our studio transformation started with plenty of demolition, dust, and heavy lifting!

A HUGE shoutout to Mr. James, who planned our entire floor reconstruction and built our brand-new ballet floors from the ground up. We are constantly amazed by all that he can do and incredibly grateful for everything he does for our dancers and our studio. How did we get so lucky?!

And another big thank you to Ms. Laura, Ms. Amy, and Jack for jumping in to help with demolition and cleanup. It truly took a team!

✨ Faculty Spotlight | Laura Morton La Russa ✨

Ms. Laura directs the Contemporary and Tap programs at Van Metre School of Dance and also teaches Ballet!

An alumna of VMSD and Appalachian Ballet Company, Ms. Laura continued her training at Houston Ballet Academy before spending nine years performing professionally in Atlanta with Atlanta Ballet, staibdance, and Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre. In 2021, she was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” and her choreography has received three National Choreography Recognition Awards through Regional Dance America.

Ms. Laura now serves as a Principal Artist, Resident Choreographer, and Marketing Director for Appalachian Ballet Company while continuing to perform as a Company Artist with PARA.MAR Dance Theatre. Returning home has given her the opportunity to share the experiences, ideas, and artistry she continues to gain throughout her professional career with the dancers who are now growing within the same community that shaped her.

In the studio, Ms. Laura encourages her students to move with curiosity, individuality, and confidence. She loves helping dancers discover new possibilities within their movement, challenge the way they think about dance, and develop into artists who trust their own voices.

Ms. Laura can’t wait to dive into a new season of dance — full of growth, laughter, and grooves!🐙🤍 . .

✨ Faculty Spotlight | Kylie Morton Berry ✨

Ms. Kylie is one of our main Ballet teachers at Van Metre School of Dance and also directs our Jazz program!

A former VMSD and Appalachian Ballet Company dancer, she went on to perform professionally with North Carolina Dance Theatre, now Charlotte Ballet, before returning home to continue her career with ABC. Her performance career included beloved roles such as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Cinderella, Peter Pan, and The Little Mermaid, before retiring from the stage in 2023.

Today, Ms. Kylie serves as Associate Artistic Director and Rehearsal Mistress for Appalachian Ballet Company, is certified in Progressing Ballet Technique, and holds national leadership roles with Regional Dance America. Her experience as a performer, educator, and artistic leader allows her to guide dancers with both technical clarity and a deep respect for each student’s personal journey.

Ms. Kylie is passionate about helping young dancers grow into strong artists and confident individuals. She leaves a lasting impact not only on technique, but on confidence, work ethic, and a love for dance. Ms. Kylie reminds her students that growth takes time, courage, and heart—and that they are capable of more than they may realize💕🩰

Ms. Kylie is excited for a new season full of continued growth, joy, and lots of dancing! . .
