You can with HIS/OST/ENV 349: Nature and Nation.
Drs. Dan Klingensmith and Phillip Sherman are leading a travel study course to the fabled Black Forest in southwestern Germany--with day trips to Switzerland and France.

How long is the trip?

We have planned a 14 day trip. We will be spending the first week in the city of Freiburg. Known as ‘sun-city,’ Freiburg is on the border between Switzerland, Germany, and France. It is one of the most popular destinations for those traveling in the Black Forest region. The second week will provide opportunities to travel deeper into the Black Forest to experience German history and culture.

What will be doing?

We will be spending a lot of time in the Black Forest and thinking about how our experience of nature relates to our understanding of national identity. We will be taking several half-day hikes in the Black Forest, visiting Strasbourg, France to learn about the medieval and modern history of the city, and floating down the Rhine river to witness one of the largest waterfalls in Europe.

We will also be meeting faculty and students at the University of Freiburg. There will also be a number of culinary classes—cheese making, pretzels, and bier.

How does this fit into my academic major?

Easily. The course is offered as a HIS/OST/ENV 349 and meets the WRC requirement. Whatever you are studying, we will find ways to connect.

Can I afford it?

Yes. We are actively working to lower the current sticker price with our provider. We are also pursuing fundraising events in the Spring to off-set costs. Students routinely receive additional scholarships to assist in making payments more reasonable and manageable. We are always happy to sit down and talk about how best to budget.

Global Competencies are at the center of a Maryville College education. Cuisine is essential to exploring any culture on a deeper level.

Dr. Doug Sofer shared his love of cooking with students in his WRC 370: Africa course. The course is part of the Maryville College Core Curriculum and challenges students to explore a range of global cultures.

These delicious dishes were only an appetizer! Dr. Sofer will be back at the Downtown Center this coming May to help students explore the history of Latin America through food.

If you are mortal, or know someone who is, this interdisciplinary course is for you.
