Maryville College Division of Fine Arts

Comments

The COVID-19 pandemic greatly restricted travel over the past two years, and while things are slowly getting back to normal, the The Orchestra at Maryville College is ready to spirit you away on Monday!

The title of the ensemble’s spring performance is “Around the World,” and the selections on the program are regionally distinctive pieces designed to evoke exotic locales, says Maryville College Division of Fine Arts’ Dr. Eric Simpson. It takes place at the Clayton Center for the Arts, and it’s a mere pittance ($5) in exchange for some sonic travel to foreign lands! Read more:
Jennifer Anderson didn't go far after she graduated from MC in 2005, which is good for us ... because it means she can come "home" frequently and lend her incredible talent to various Maryville College Division of Fine Arts groups, such as the MC3 Band, which (reminder!) performs Thursday at the Clayton Center for the Arts!

Dr. Anderson (maiden name: Olander, for you Maryville College Alumni wondering where you know her from!) is also a visiting piano instructor when she's not serving as assistant director of music at Maryville First United Methodist Church, and she's also been tapped to serve as guest conductor for the MC Homecoming Choir this fall.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, she'll perform "Cordoba” by composer Julie Giroux, who was inspired by the loss of her father. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he often spoke lovingly of Spain to Giroux, who infused "Cordoba" with Iberian flavors to pay tribute.

"The piece is a tribute to him and is Spanish in nature," Anderson says. "It is written for concert band and features a thrilling piano solo throughout. It is heartbreaking, exciting and very moving."

Be there to hear it in person, along with the rest of the "Heart-Breaking" program!
Behold the clarinet: A woodwind often overshadowed by the mellifluous sounds of the flute or the sexy swing of the sax. Casual music fans often overlook the complexity and nuance it brings to a piece of music, however, but thanks to Maryville College Division of Fine Arts senior Elisabeth Jackson, it'll be front and center for her recital coming up on April 26 at the Clayton Center for the Arts. Details here:
They're not TRYING to break your heart, but the members of the MC3 Band most definitely have an emotional repertoire on tap for their April 21 spring concert! Read all about it, and while you're at it, check out all of the wondrous and wonderful offerings, musical and otherwise, in the Maryville College Division of Fine Arts!
If you're an alum of the Maryville College Division of Fine Arts ... if you've ever enjoyed the collected voices of the College's various choral programs at the Clayton Center for the Arts ... then you've experienced the work put into molding singers and vocalists at MC by Alan Eleazer.

As always, we're grateful for his service, and when he retires at the end of the semester, he'll leave behind big shoes to fill. In the meantime, the Maryville College Community Chorus will send him off on a high note next week with a spring performance that will be sublime. Read more:
If you ever find yourself wondering what exactly our students do here at MC, the answer is fairly simple, on the surface at least: They study everything, so that they're prepared for anything.

What do we mean by that? Drop by campus and see for yourself tomorrow afternoon, when the Undergraduate Research Symposium will take place, spotlighting senior study projects, internships and work-study opportunities that showcase the ways our undergrads are broadening their perspectives and expanding their knowledge.

For a full list of participating students in our various divisions — Math and Computer Sciences; Natural Sciences; Social Sciences; Fine Arts; Languages and Literature; and Humanities — as well a schedule, read on:
It's coming down to the wire for the Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine Top Adventure College poll, and we're hungry for the championship round!

If you define "adventure" as enthusiastic academic and arts opportunities, we've got them. Yesterday's STEMfest drew hundreds of people to the MC campus, our Maryville College Division of Fine Arts has multiple performances scheduled this month, and we're in a full-court press all the way up to commencement with banquets, ceremonies, dinners and gatherings designed to celebrate cerebral achievements by our students, faculty and alumni!

If you define it as outdoor recreation, look no further than the plethora of offerings within a short drive of campus, from the Great Smokies Experience at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the restoration efforts in our own Maryville College Woods to the ongoing seasons by the Maryville College Baseball and Maryville College Softball teams!

Here at MC, "adventure" is what we live for, and we need YOU to help us show the rest of the world that we're deserving of the title! Click the link, cast your vote, and we'll (fingers crossed!) see you in the championship round!

If you drive by Maryville College and wonder what, exactly, our students are up to, you have a chance this month to see some of their work for yourself!

Over in the Maryville College Division of Fine Arts, art and design students are putting their collected creations on display at the Clayton Center for the Arts. The annual senior art show is designed to highlight the enormous amount of talent these fantastic photographers, designers and artists have, and the ways that MC has helped them refine it, and you're welcome to drop by any time to check it out.

Over the years, we've been honored to be associated with four individuals who have been inducted into the Educators Hall of Honor at the UTK College of Education, Health, & Human Sciences. which selects nominees from across the country who have made an impact on improving education.

The most recent, Harry Harter, served for more than three decades as a music professor in the Maryville College Division of Fine Arts, and his work helped students find roles at prestigious institutions like The Metropolitan Opera. His annual productions of "Messiah" became can't-miss holiday events, and his inclusion in an upcoming ceremony is well deserved.

Read more about the honor, and Harry, from this weekend's story in The Daily Times:
A concert of "Poorly Reviewed" music might seem repulsive, but not so fast! Did you know that "Over the Rainbow," upon the release of The Wizard of Oz, was critically panned? The Maryville College Division of Fine Arts ensemble Tartanband has it on the program, along with numerous other "One Star" pieces, for an April 7 concert that sounds like a delight. Read more about it:
It's been three years, thanks to COVID-19, since the Friends of Maryville College Concert Choir who live around the Southeast have had an opportunity to hear the ensemble perform in person.

That all changes next month, when one of the linchpin organizations of the Maryville College Division of Fine Arts embarks on its "Sing Together, Always" choir tour, which will include stops at Maryville First United Methodist Church; Northside Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga; Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rome, Georgia; Morningside Presbyterian Church in Atlanta; First Presbyterian Church - Gainesville, GA; and a March 29 Homecoming Concert at the Clayton Center for the Arts.

Band students from Heritage High School, William Blount High School and Alcoa High School will take the stage on Tuesday at the Clayton Center for the Arts for the Foothills Band Festival Concert, a showcase organized by the Maryville College Division of Fine Arts to highlight the wealth of musical talent in Blount County ... and give potential students a glimpse of opportunities they can take advantage of as an MC Scot, including the formation of a fall pep band that will eventually become the college's marching band! This past week at the University of Georgia, the 2023 Gulf South Summit took place on service-leading and civic engagement through higher education. Our very own Professor Adrienne Schwarte co-presented a poster titled: “Showcasing 5+ Years of Student-Designed Environmental Education Projects Utilized in Local Elementary School Districts (Including Title 1 Schools) and After School Community Programs”.

Adrienne got to meet the school mascot, “Hairy Dawg", while she was there. Congratulations on presenting at the summit, Adrienne!
