The title of the ensemble’s spring performance is “Around the World,” and the selections on the program are regionally distinctive pieces designed to evoke exotic locales, says Maryville College Division of Fine Arts’ Dr. Eric Simpson. It takes place at the Clayton Center for the Arts, and it’s a mere pittance ($5) in exchange for some sonic travel to foreign lands! Read more:
Dr. Anderson (maiden name: Olander, for you Maryville College Alumni wondering where you know her from!) is also a visiting piano instructor when she's not serving as assistant director of music at Maryville First United Methodist Church, and she's also been tapped to serve as guest conductor for the MC Homecoming Choir this fall.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, she'll perform "Cordoba” by composer Julie Giroux, who was inspired by the loss of her father. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he often spoke lovingly of Spain to Giroux, who infused "Cordoba" with Iberian flavors to pay tribute.
"The piece is a tribute to him and is Spanish in nature," Anderson says. "It is written for concert band and features a thrilling piano solo throughout. It is heartbreaking, exciting and very moving."
Be there to hear it in person, along with the rest of the "Heart-Breaking" program!
As always, we're grateful for his service, and when he retires at the end of the semester, he'll leave behind big shoes to fill. In the meantime, the Maryville College Community Chorus will send him off on a high note next week with a spring performance that will be sublime. Read more:

If you define "adventure" as enthusiastic academic and arts opportunities, we've got them. Yesterday's STEMfest drew hundreds of people to the MC campus, our Maryville College Division of Fine Arts has multiple performances scheduled this month, and we're in a full-court press all the way up to commencement with banquets, ceremonies, dinners and gatherings designed to celebrate cerebral achievements by our students, faculty and alumni!
If you define it as outdoor recreation, look no further than the plethora of offerings within a short drive of campus, from the Great Smokies Experience at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the restoration efforts in our own Maryville College Woods to the ongoing seasons by the Maryville College Baseball and Maryville College Softball teams!
Here at MC, "adventure" is what we live for, and we need YOU to help us show the rest of the world that we're deserving of the title! Click the link, cast your vote, and we'll (fingers crossed!) see you in the championship round!

The most recent, Harry Harter, served for more than three decades as a music professor in the Maryville College Division of Fine Arts, and his work helped students find roles at prestigious institutions like The Metropolitan Opera. His annual productions of "Messiah" became can't-miss holiday events, and his inclusion in an upcoming ceremony is well deserved.
Read more about the honor, and Harry, from this weekend's story in The Daily Times:
