Multi-Sensory Phonics & Phonemic Awareness: Reading, Writing & Spelling

Is your child struggling with reading, spelling, writing, or remembering spelling patterns? Or perhaps they simply need a stronger foundation in literacy? This engaging ongoing class is designed to help children build essential reading skills through a structured, multi-sensory approach to literacy instruction.

Based on the science of reading, this class focuses on the skills children need to become confident and capable readers. Students will learn how sounds work together, how letters represent those sounds, and how spelling patterns and rules can help make reading and writing more predictable and meaningful.

What will students learn?

Phonemic awareness
Letter-sound relationships
Phonics and decoding
Spelling patterns and rules
Reading words with greater confidence
Writing and spelling skills
Strategies that support reading fluency
Skills that strengthen overall literacy

The class uses multi-sensory learning activities, allowing children to engage with lessons through seeing, hearing, saying, moving, and doing. This can make learning more memorable and give students different ways to connect with the skills they are practicing.

If your child has dyslexia, SAVE THIS before your next IEP or 504 meeting. 📌

Accommodations aren’t about lowering expectations. They’re about removing barriers that have nothing to do with what we’re actually trying to teach or measure.

If a student can demonstrate mastery in 5 problems, do they always need 20?

If we’re assessing science knowledge, does handwriting or spelling need to determine the grade?

If copying from the board means they miss the instruction, could we give them the notes?

And if they know the answer, could they SHOW us what they know another way?

Oral response. Recorded response. Diagram. Model. Presentation. Speech-to-text. Project. Demonstration.

The question I want us asking isn’t:

“How do we make this easier?”

It’s:

“What barrier is keeping this child from accessing the learning or showing us what they actually know?”

And accommodations are only one piece.

Accommodations Made Simple: Supporting a Struggling Learner

When a child struggles in school, sometimes they don’t need to work harder—they need the right support to access learning.

Accommodations are changes in how a child learns or shows what they know without changing the learning goal.

Examples may include:

Reading: Audiobooks, highlighting key information, extra time
Writing: Graphic organizers, sentence starters, typing instead of handwriting
Math: Manipulatives, step-by-step directions, formula sheets
Attention: Preferential seating, breaks, clear directions
Processing Speed: Extra time, smaller steps, written instructions

And remember: accommodations are not “special treatment.” They are designed to remove barriers so children have a fair opportunity to demonstrate what they know.

If you have concerns, start by observing patterns, talking with the teacher, sharing what works at home, and working together to find appropriate supports.

You are your child's best advocate.

Is My Child Struggling or Just Developing?

Every child learns at their own pace. Some need more time and support.

Look for patterns—not one mistake.

Occasionally reversing a letter, forgetting instructions, or struggling with math can happen during development. Pay closer attention when difficulties continue.

Signs to watch for:

Reading: Difficulty with letter sounds, words, or understanding stories.

Writing: Trouble with letters, spelling, or expressing ideas.

Math: Difficulty with numbers, counting, or basic facts.

Language: Trouble following directions or expressing thoughts.

Attention: Easily distracted, forgetful, or struggles to finish tasks.

Emotions: Frequent frustration, avoiding schoolwork, or losing confidence.

Talk to the teacher when: concerns continue, your child is falling behind, or schoolwork causes frustration. Teachers can share observations and suggest support.

Consider an evaluation when: difficulties continue despite extra help, progress remains limited, or learning is significantly affected. An evaluation helps identify strengths and challenges.

What can parents do?

📖 Read together daily.
🧩 Break tasks into small steps.
👏 Praise effort and progress.

Most importantly, protect your child's confidence. Struggling does not mean a child cannot learn.

Every child learns differently, and reaching milestones can look different from one child to another. But sometimes, ongoing difficulties with reading, writing, math, language, attention, or learning may be signs that a child needs additional support.

Teacher Kylie is sharing 3 simple reading hacks to turn reading practice into a game!

🔎 Go on a word hunt! Pick a high-frequency word your child is working on and see where you can find it—in a book, on a cereal box, in a magazine, or even in the junk mail!

🤪 Read in silly voices! Take turns reading like a robot, a monster, a tiny mouse, or my personal favorite—the mad scientist! 🧪

⏱️ Beat the clock! Set a timer and see how many words your child can read before it goes off, or time a page and see if they can beat their own time on the second read.

And remember: the goal isn’t speed—it’s practice. ❤️ When we add a little play, repetition doesn’t have to feel repetitive. We can get kids reading the same words again and again while keeping them engaged and having fun.
