2nd Grade Teacher

Our Purpose: St. John’s Lutheran School exists in Christ to equip and educate students by developing the mind and engaging the heart to impact communities for Christ.
Accountability: The teacher is a minister of our congregation. S/he works cooperatively as a team member with all other personnel of the school and church. The teacher’s supervisor is the principal of the school, who receives the teacher’s school-related reports, questions, and concerns. The teacher will meet with the principal and senior pastor each June in order to review non-school assignments in the congregation’s ministry and to recommend changes to the boards responsible for those ministries for the year ahead. Accountability is to the chairperson of those boards.
Personal Qualifications: The teacher associates closely with God through prayer, study of the Scriptures, and regular church and Communion attendance. S/he gives ample evidence of a life-style that reflects a dynamic relationship with Christ. The teacher is open-minded and tolerant and has a happy and positive outlook on life. S/he is sensitive to the needs of others, cares about the feelings of others, shows Christian concern for all, maintains confidence, and is respectful of others. S/he uses correct language and written forms. S/he is tactful, warm, courteous, and is an effective listener. The physical and emotional health of the teacher is good, and s/he is poised, punctual, and enthusiastic. The teacher is able to articulate clearly objectives of our Christian school and evidences a love for teaching children. S/he makes a good appearance in terms of dress and style and attends and participates in church and community activities.
Professional Qualifications
The teacher holds teaching ministry certification from our national church body or has indicated intent to meet the requirements to do so. S/he holds the minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education. The teacher has been certified by the state department of education or will soon be able to receive such certification. S/he understands and supports the congregation’s program of education for all grade levels.
Teaching Position Purpose: The position assigns the teacher to instruct the assigned grade, which will have approximately 25 students in a self-contained classroom. The teacher will be responsible for teaching all the assigned grade subjects.
Essential Performance Responsibilities: Develops and administers school curriculum consistent with St. John’s Lutheran Church & Schools goals and objectives. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction Teaches all required subject matters as assigned to the grade level, which may include reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music to pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study. Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual small group instruction as needed. Instructs students in the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the St. John's Lutheran School. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents. Ensures that students conform with the school's standards and SJLS policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Coordinates with other elementary professional staff members, especially within grade level and specific subjects, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees. Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records. Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation. Administers standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs. The room is neat and clear. It represents an enjoyable, learning-oriented environment for children
Additional Responsibilities: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Education Executive of the Lutheran schools of Ohio. Arriving at school by 7:30 am-attending daily faculty devotions, and leaving school no earlier than 3:15 pm. Preparing quarterly report cards for parents and meetings with all parents on the designated conference days. Attending all teacher conferences. Is responsible for playground, corridor, lunchroom, and other supervision, as it is assigned.
Terms of Service: Every June a thorough evaluation of the teacher’s ministry will be conducted by the principal in order to assist the teacher in maintaining a high caliber of service. Personal integrity, job satisfaction, and job performance will be the basic elements of this evaluation.
Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Education Executive of the Lutheran Schools of Ohio.
Equipment: Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements: Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught.
Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
Ability to organize and coordinate work.
Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted
in the course of work.

Qualifications Profile
Certification/License: First Aid, Child CPR, Child Abuse Training

Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education: Bachelors or higher from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignments.
Experience: Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred. New Graduates welcome!
