On July 8, 2020, the Public Safety Staff at Yuba College learned of the tragic shooting death of Dr. Gershman in Sierra County days earlier. When the news of this tragic incident was shared with the police academy cadets, they sprung into action by partnering in the Love Light Virtual Lawn Luminary event for the Gershman family with the Sierra County Sheriffs Department. Each one of the 22 cadets prepared luminary bags expressing their support and condolences to the family and also celebrating the life of a great man, father, husband and doctor.

The fine men and women of Yuba College Police Academy Class 26 understand that policing is about service first. They all truly have guardian hearts and are prepared and determined to be the change and to help restore the trust and respect for peace officers. They know that they must give respect before they receive it. The academy staff is doing an outstanding job in preparing these cadets by showing them what it truly means to be the type of peace officers that our communities so desperately need and want; those will big hearts that care about other human beings and treat them like their own family members.
