π HAPPY WORLD BEE DAY! β¨May 20 π
Today we celebrate one of natureβs smallest but most important workers β the bee! πΌπ
Did you know?
π There are over 20,000 species of bees around the world.
π 1 out of every 3 bites of food we eat exists because bees help pollinate plants.
Bees need our help!
You can support them by:
πΈ Planting native flowers
π« Avoiding pesticides
π§ Leaving a small dish of water out for thirsty bees
Letβs protect these amazing little pollinators and help our world bloom!π

This week, the children are studying dandelion, a beneficial w**d. They enjoy playing in the mud kitchen, where they create dandelion-themed menus. The kids also practice their drawing skills by sketching their observations. It's a delight to play with dirt and water on warm days.π»πΌ

Pick up a fallen eggshell in your yard and the color tells you something about where the nest is.
If it's blue or green, the nest is likely an open cup in a tree or shrub. The pigment costs the mother energy to produce β it comes from her own body chemistry during shell formation. Blue eggs in an open nest may also help filter sunlight reaching the embryo.
If it's spotted or speckled with brown, the nest is probably on or near the ground. The markings are camouflage. Killdeer eggs sit directly on gravel β buff with dark splotches, nearly invisible from three feet away.
If it's plain white, the nest is inside a cavity. Woodpecker holes. Owl boxes. Chickadee cavities. No predator is scanning the eggs visually, so camouflage pigment isn't needed. White is the default when the nest is hidden.
Three colors. Three nesting strategies. Written into the shell before the chick starts growing.
π¦ What to look for this month:
- Blue fragments in the grass β likely a robin or bluebird nest in a nearby tree or shrub
- Brown-speckled shells on gravel or bare ground β a killdeer or sparrow nesting at ground level
- White shells near a tree with holes β a cavity nester like a chickadee or woodpecker raised a clutch inside
The color isn't decoration. It's a map back to where the nest is πΏ
