Our blessings continue to be abundant! Last week, we were gifted with new heavy-duty shelving for the Patriot Pantry. These shelves came just in time, as we received two large donations last week!

First, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Karen with United Way of Henry County & Martinsville (pictured below) who brought by some donations for the Patriot Pantry! Additionally, community members, Brandon and Emily Earles, made a donation of needed items for the Pantry as well! To top it all off, two of our students, Lundyn and Heaven, stopped by this morning to help us restock the Pantry's new shelves with all of our new items!

We are incredibly grateful for all of the love and support shown to our mission and to our students! We couldn't do this without each and every one of you!!

Did you know? The consequences of food insecurity edition – Part 5: Pregnancy and Birth Outcomes!

Food insecurity during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of low birth weight, preterm birth, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia. The pathway is partly nutritional: poor diet and excess weight gain raises the odds of pregnancy complications. Research on pregnant adolescents has shown that the strongest link between chronic food insecurity and worse birth outcomes runs through depression. Chronic food insecurity was significantly associated with lower birth weight and shorter gestational age through the pathway of depressive symptoms. Pregnant women experiencing depression are at risk for problems with placental function and restricted fetal growth, both of which directly affect how early and how small a baby is born.
