While Lake Land College students were enjoying spring break, the Fieldhouse was taken over by approximately 135 high school students. These students made up 27 teams to participate in the 2026 Land Use Council #7 Envirothon. Students were representing schools from Clark, Champaign, Coles, Edgar, Douglas and Vermilion Counties. Two teams from Marshall and three teams from Martinsville were among the participants from Clark County.
During the event, each team worked together to complete written tests in the areas of Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife and the Current Issue: “Non-point source pollution mitigation: It begins at home!” Teams also had the opportunity to give an oral presentation based on a scenario relating to the Current Issue. The Clark County team giving their oral presentation to the group was Marshall.
In addition to the academic testing, Rick Manor with the Urbana Champaign Sanitary District. Rick spoke about point source pollution and their impact on our drinking water. Lunch was provided for all students, teachers and volunteers.
Winning first and second place among Clark County teams were the Marshall FFA teams. Third place went to the Martinsville team #1. Plaques were presented to the Clark County winners. A variety of awards were also presented to overall and county winners, as well as category winners.
This year’s overall winning team was from Paris High School. The Paris team will compete at the Illinois State Envirothon to be held at the 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello, Illinois, April 29 & 30. There, they will compete with other Illinois Land Use Council winners for the opportunity to advance to the National Envirothon, which will be held on the campus of Mississippi State University, July 19–25.
The Envirothon is annually sponsored by the SWCDs in Land Use Council #7, and the employees in the Council. This was the 27th year for this event. The Clark County teams were sponsored by the Clark County SWCD.
We congratulate the Clark County teams for a job well done and wish Paris High School the best of luck with their competition at the State Envirothon.
