Great news from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, courtesy of The Catholic Spirit WV:

WEST VIRGINIA — As hallways filled with bright smiles and backpacks across West Virginia on the first days of school, the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston is celebrating another year of growth.

Catholic school enrollment across the state climbed from about 4,900 students last year to more than 5,100, according to opening-day numbers for the 2026-27 academic year. This increase marks
five consecutive years of steady enrollment growth across West Virginia’s Catholic schools, with 17 of the
25 schools seeing an increase for this current year.

“Year after year, more families across the state are seeking a learning environment rooted in traditional
values, academic rigor and vibrant faith formation," said Jennifer Hornyak, superintendent of Catholic schools for the diocese. “We are so proud of the strong tradition of Catholic education in West Virginia, where high academic standards go hand in hand with our faith. As we welcome new families into our schools, we remain committed to working alongside parents to help every child recognize, develop and share their God-given talents while growing closer to
Christ and serving others in our state. We feel honored by the trust that our parents place in us.”

Centered on the theme of "Growing in Grace" for the 2026-27 school year, this ongoing expansion reflects a combination of dedicated administrators, devoted teachers and staff, and strong parish communities that help reinforce the schools’ strong foundation rooted
in faith, excellence and service.

By welcoming more students into these school classrooms, educators throughout the Diocese of
Wheeling-Charleston are nurturing the hearts and minds of the next generation. This growth demonstrates that families across our great
state continue to recognize the lasting value of a Catholic education.

As the new school year unfolds, every new student represents another opportunity to cultivate the growth of the child as a whole person — ensuring that West
Virginia’s Catholic schools continue to grow in grace for years to come.

An appointment to a U.S. Service Academy is a fully funded education opportunity valued from $240,000 to more than $400,000.

Last year, students attending or who attended schools in Berkeley, Hampshire, Harrison, Jefferson, Marshall, Mason, Mercer, Monongalia, Putnam and Randolph counties received appointments to U.S. service academies and preparatory schools. Most accepted their appointments and began their journeys this summer.

WV students graduated from U.S service academies in 2026 and are moving forward to fantastic careers in various fields.

Following is information about Academy Day 2026 for all students, parents, guardians and school officials interested in learning more about U.S. service academies (Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, Military/West Point, Naval).

Representatives from local ROTC programs will be on hand to discuss ROTC scholarship opportunities. Mock interviews will be offered and a representative from the Department of Defense’s Medical Examination Review Board will join us on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Academy Day is an opportunity for students, parents, guardians and school officials to ask questions and obtain information regarding the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy as well as the ROTC scholarship process.

No registration is required.

Students who want to attend a prestigious U.S. service academy or ROTC program are generally more successful when they begin planning courses and extracurricular activities early in their academic career. Please attend and encourage middle- and high school-aged students and parents to attend.
