Beyond its emotional resonance, researchers are beginning to unpack something profound: music isn’t just enjoyable and it also interacts with attention, mood, and cognition in ways that can support mental health and clinical care.
In this issue, we explore emerging research on music’s role in the brain and mind. Rather than suggesting a panacea, the evidence highlights how and for whom music might bolster psychological functioning, whether through enhancing attention, reducing anxiety, supporting sleep, or complementing traditional treatments. As integrative practitioners, understanding these mechanisms allows us to meet clients where they are, honoring personal meaning and preference as part of therapeutic change.
