UTM Family and Consumer Sciences Welcome to Family and Consumer Sciences at University of Tennessee at Martin Graduate assistantships are available. degree.

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The didactic program in dietetics is approved by the American Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). The undergraduate curriculum prepares students for the bachelor of science in family and consumer sciences sciences. The major is called family and consumer sciences and offers three concentrations and options within the concentrations:

Child and Family Studies
Family and Consumer Sciences Education
Gerontology
Fashion Merchandising
Food and Nutrition
Dietetics

UT Martin family and consumer sciences students are active in the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Fashion Merchandising Association, Interior Design Group and the Student Dietetic Association. These organizations provide opportunities for students to interact socially and professionally. Facilities:
Facilities for teaching and other activities of the academic program include modern classrooms, laboratories and demonstration areas, most located in Gooch Hall. Laboratories are equipped with modern equipment, large work centers, and portable demonstration units to facilitate effective learning.

•The UT Martin Children's Center provides services for the enrichment of children, allows for the observation of young children and provides practical experience for students working with children.
•The Child and Family Resource Center provides services to developmentally delayed preschool children and their families, providing unique opportunities for observation by students.
•The Healthy Start and Healthy Beginnings Grant Programs provide education to first time and young mothers in the region. Graduate Programs of Study
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a master of science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with two options: general family and consumer sciences and dietetics. The first option is generalist in nature based on a selected range of comprehensive courses. Students under this option may choose an emphasis in child and family studies or remain generalist. The dietetics option incorporates a Dietetic Internship Program in Dietetics (DI). The DI offers graduates of didactic programs in dietetics a post-baccalaureate, clinically based practicum. Students completing the DI portion of option two are eligible to take the examination that leads to becoming a registered dietitian (R.D). This option incorporates the DI practicum into an advanced degree program which will lead to a M.S.

Styling the Provost: A Special Visit to FASH 102!

Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Laurie L Couch Provost of UTM, to our FASH 102: Fashion image associated with her position.
Dr. Couch shared insights into her role as Provost, discussing the professional dress expectations, wardrobe considerations, and personal image associated with her position.
Our students had the opportunity to ask questions about her personal style preferences, clothing comfort needs, and professional wardrobe requirements.
The engaging conversation marks the beginning of an exciting hands-on project, "Styling the Provost," in which students will apply their knowledge of personal styling, professional image, and wardrobe planning to develop personalized styling recommendations for Dr. Couch.
We sincerely appreciate Dr. Couch taking time to engage with our students and contribute to this unique learning experience. We look forward to seeing students' creativity and styling expertise come to life. Angie Land Gertsch

Congratulations to UTM-FCS Alum, Brittany Peeler.
The Y is excited to announce that Brittany Peeler has been selected as the new Director of Youth & Family Services at the Southeast Family YMCA!

While Brittany may be stepping into a new leadership role, she is certainly not new to the Southeast Y. For the past 9½ years, Brittany has served part-time as a Membership Facilitator, building relationships with our members, families, and staff and developing a strong connection to the Southeast community.

Brittany also brings significant professional experience in youth and family services. Since 2017, she has served as a Social Service Supervisor II with Madison County DHR, where she supervises frontline case-management staff and has extensive experience with child protective services, foster care, adoptions, crisis intervention, service coordination, and supporting children and families with complex needs.

Her educational background aligns especially well with this role. Brittany holds a Master of Science in Social Work from Alabama A&M University, with a concentration in Family and Child Welfare, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Science from the University of Tennessee, with a concentration in Child and Family Studies. Brittany brings a unique combination of professional expertise and deep YMCA experience to this position. She understands our mission, our members, and the Southeast Family YMCA, and we are excited to see her bring those strengths together as she leads and supports our youth and family programs.

Dr. Jason Roberts, Professor of Animal Science and Program Director of Veterinary Technology in the Department of Agriculture, Geoscience, and Natural Resources, is the recipient of $2,000 award in the creative projects category of the Fall 2026 Faculty Development Grant Program. Dr. Roberts will host the Skyhawk Veterinary Summit, a two-day continuing education conference at UT Martin featuring nationally recognized speakers, an exhibit hall, and CPR certification, held November 14–15, 2026.
