This is the third week of building our Playlist by Professors 🎵, where we will feature select composers and their works as recommended by the UTM Music Faculty, and this group could not be more different! Make sure to keep an eye out for the remaining composers to come!

Week 3: 🧡🎶💙

Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911) 📯
“I appreciate the fact that he wrote such fantastic melodies (and solos!) for us. The sheer power and incredible beauty of his music never ceases to amaze me.”

“The bigger the orchestra, the better! His 8th symphony is known as the ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ because there were over ONE THOUSAND performers at its premiere!”

John Coltrane (1926 - 1967) 🎷
“I have a genuine urge to listen to his works more than once. After decades of listening, I still find his works engaging and am still profoundly affected on all listening levels. I suspect there is a strong nostalgic component. Although I'm not always in the mood for Coltrane, I am certainly more often in the mood for Coltrane than most anything else.”

Rosephanye Powell (1962 - present) 🎹
“She is my favorite modern choral and vocal composer. I was first introduced to her work when I had the opportunity to sing some of her compositions and work with her for an All-West. In my personal aesthetic opinion, she is truly coming out to be one of the modern masters of the choral spiritual.”

Can you guess the faculty member and their pick? ☺️

Composers impact what we do in UTM Music every day - have you ever wondered who your professors' favorites are? 👀 This is the second week of building our Playlist by Professors 🎵 where we will feature select composers and their works as recommended by UTM Music Faculty.

Week 2: 🧡🎶💙

Henri Tomasi (1901 - 1971) 🎺
“His music is unmatched in pure lyrical majesty”

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958) 🎶
“He was a great composer of melodies and orchestrator. RVW composed pieces for lesser recognized instruments, and never bowed to what the British public thought he should be.”

Cody Fry (1990 - present) ⭐️
“I'm a huge fan of the way he combines orchestral and pop elements in his music. His music includes what could be defined as golden-age orchestral moments, starting from a singer-songwriter moment at the piano and ending with an emotional, sweeping orchestral gesture. It makes you feel like you've stepped into your favorite movie, and I love that about his work!”

Can you guess the faculty member and their pick? ☺️

Composers impact what we do in UTM Music every day - have you ever wondered who your professors' favorites are? 👀This summer, we are creating a Playlist by Professors 🎵 where each week we will feature select composers and their works as recommended by UTM Music Faculty.

Week 1: 🧡🎶💙

William Walton (1902 - 1983) 𝄢
"A really varied and dynamic composer.”

Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937) 🎹
“A composer who loved fine clothing, cats, and whimsical mechanical toys, Ravel composed beautiful melodies inertwined with lush, complex harmonies. His musical world provides endless opportunities to explore the cultural, political, and artistic intersections which created the backdrop for his small yet substantial body of work.”

Igor Stravinsky (1882 - 1971) 🩰
“His compositional voice was singular and clear, even as he explored and innovated over the span of his career.”
