We here at the UTM Police Department want you to be safe in your online use. We want to remind you, please don't send pics of your "bits" when chatting with someone you met online. They are more than likely not who you think or envision them to be. Common practice of those out to fool you is to extort you for money by these people. A moment of letting your guard down can cause hours of anguish over being threatened.

Please come to the October 19th training on Consent, Coercion and Online Safety. The time is 4pm-5pm and will be held at the University Center room 229. Training will be presented by WRAP.

Please do not be a victim.

We had a scooter rider vs pedestrian collision this morning. A student riding a scooter on a pathway between Clement and the University Center collided with a student walking on the same path. This collision caused a significant injury to the student who was walking. The injury included being checked by EMS and a trip to the emergency room.

Please use extreme caution when operating a scooter near pedestrians on walkways. Remember, pedestrians have the right of way on all walkways and are not required to move out of the way for scooter riders to pass. If you, as a scooter rider, cause an accident, you could be civilly or criminally liable for your actions.

The Department of Public Safety encourages students to take a few simple steps to help prevent bike and e-bike theft on campus:
• Use a strong U-lock or heavy-duty chain lock.
• Lock the frame and wheel to a bike rack.
• Do not leave bikes unsecured or locked only by the front wheel.
• Avoid leaving bikes in low-traffic areas for long periods.
• Record the serial number, make, model, color, and photos of your bike.

Public Safety has a fillable personal property inventory sheet students can use to document bikes, electronics, and other valuable property before a theft occurs:

Having this information on file can help officers identify and recover property if it is stolen.

Report suspicious activity or thefts to Public Safety as soon as possible.

Example Photo for style of lock that is recommended. It would take a hack saw to cut through this lock. This would equal more time for the person interested in stealing the item being around. This may deter some thieves more than having to use bolt cutters on chain locks, which can be cut quickly.

Unfortunately our post about scooter safety did not help as much as we hoped. Today a scooter rider rode the scooter through a crosswalk and was struck by a vehicle. Fortunately the rider came out with very minor injury.

A scooter is considered a motor driven vehicle and is subject to traffic laws. Please walk your scooter through the crosswalk and be mindful of your surroundings.

Scooter Safety on Campus

Electric scooters are a convenient way to get around campus, but our walkways are shared spaces. Help keep everyone safe:

• Pedestrians have priority. Slow down, yield, and be prepared to stop.
• Keep your speed under control. Ride at walking speed in crowded areas and near building entrances.
• Walk your scooter through crosswalks and check for traffic before entering the roadway.
• No riding or charging electric scooters inside university buildings.
• Park responsibly. Keep scooters upright and out of sidewalks, doorways, ramps, accessible routes, and other travel paths.
• Wear a helmet and use lights when riding after dark.
• When riding in the street, follow the rules of the road and travel with traffic.

Drivers: Campus is busy. Slow down, stay alert, and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.

Whether you are walking, riding, or driving, watch out for one another and help keep our Skyhawk family safe!
