We are so humbled by this testimony that the family of Amelia Barr, a 2022 GSH graduate, submitted to the Weakley County Press and thankful for the amazing faculty and staff at UTM for helping us to establish a personal tone as the campus that cares. Thank you, UTM, for your continuous support of the Tennessee Governor’s Schools hosted on the UT Martin campus!
“In June of this year, my wife and I took our daughter to Martin, TN, to spend a month at University of Tennessee Martin for the Governor’s School for the Humanities (GSH). Imagine our initial reaction to driving 4+ hours from Chattanooga, through seemingly endless miles of corn and soybeans to wind up in a town of less than 11,000 people for a college experience. Little did we know, our daughter’s life would be so positively changed by her time there, and our family would become so fond of this vibrant university and town.
For 4 weeks, at GSH, our daughter and 52 other students had the opportunity to earn college credit in courses such as political science, philosophy, and art history. For noncredit courses, students were offered Diplomacy and Statecraft, Utopian and Dystopian Thought, and Assessing American Exceptionalism. Seminars offered were Social Change Incubator, 2-minute Theater, GSH Yearbook, GSH Newspaper. The leaders and instructors for this program each had world-class credentials, yet were deeply invested in the university and community. Their commitment to building young people of intelligence and character was recognized by high student ratings and for us, has been reflected in the quantity and quality of the conversations with out daughter about her experiences there. Nearly every GSH student with whom we talked has expressed interest in taking their newfound knowledge and experiences back to their communities and schools. The impact from participation in t his program will reap benefits for the entire state of Tennessee, and beyond.
As for the city of Martin, imagine our surprise to find (literally) the Best Wings in Martin, the most amazing variety of milkshakes and burgers at The Grind, a plethora of tasty and affordable options at Sammies along with US Donuts which reminded us of our favorite, hometown donut shop from years ago. The food was legendary and served by the most friendly people you can imagine. In fact, our experience with the people there set our minds at tremendous ease about leaving our high-schooler there for a month. An extremely important part of this experience for our child was being entrusted with independence in a supportive community which was provided by the people of Martin and the university.
Simply not enough positive things can be stated in this letter about the city of martin, the GSH leadership and staff, the university, as well as the peers with whom my daughter bonded during her time there. To everyone involved in this experience our family expresses our deepest gratitude. We hope to one day pass through Martin again, and we’ll be sure to stop and enjoy this city! ”
With deepest thanks,
Jody, Wei, and Amelia Bar
