During the September 26–28 nor'easter, ARII's community wave buoys recorded how the storm played out along the Massachusetts coast.

Peak significant wave heights:
• Plum Island: 12.8 ft (Sun 8:30 AM)
• Marshfield: 12.5 ft (Sat 10:10 PM)
• Plymouth: 10.5 ft (Sun 12:30 AM)
• Sandwich: 8.4 ft (Sat 9:45 PM)
The NOAA buoy 16 nmi east of Boston read 17 ft.

Conditions varied by site. Sandwich saw short, wind-driven seas built across Cape Cod Bay. Plum Island received longer-period swell, peaked about ten hours after Marshfield, and stayed above 5 ft for roughly four days. The storm also coincided with spring tides, and Boston recorded four consecutive high tides above 12 ft.

🌊 A nor’easter is on the way and ARII’s coastal dashboard is already showing an active ocean off Marshfield.

As of 9 a.m. today, September 25:
🌊 Wave height: 5.7 feet
💨 Wind speed: 26.6 mph
🌊 Tide: Approaching high

What’s ahead? Forecasts show coastal wind gusts of 40–55 mph outside the hardest-hit areas, with waves potentially reaching 8–12 feet at local beaches. Wave action is expected to peak late Friday through Saturday, with coastal flooding and erosion concerns around high tides.

Boston 25 News also reports that rain, wind and coastal impacts could extend through the weekend and into early next week.

This is why local coastal monitoring matters. ARII’s dashboard gives our communities a window into changing conditions along our shoreline.

Tomorrow, the ARII Coastal Academy opens its doors to our inaugural cohort of 11 students!

Years of hard work, collaboration, and perseverance have brought this vision to life. We’re thrilled to welcome our students as they begin a groundbreaking six-month academic program that will lead to six industry-recognized certifications and 30 college credits through Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies.

Following the academic program, students will complete a three-month paid internship and receive a guaranteed interview for a job, providing them with valuable hands-on experience and a direct pathway into a career in the blue economy.

The Coastal Academy is transforming workforce development, creating pathways to blue economy careers, connecting young people with good jobs, and strengthening the skilled workforce across the South Shore.

This is more than the first day of class. It’s the start of something transformational for our students, our region, and the future of the blue economy.

With less than two weeks to go before the Atlantic Resiliency Innovation Institute’s Coastal Academy kicks off, we wanted to introduce you to our Lead Instructor, Mr. Brian Purcell.

Raised in Falmouth, where his father was an engineer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Brian has had a successful career in education, having taught in private and public schools from Chestnut Hill to Plymouth while also serving as an Assistant Director to a regionally recognized Tutoring Organization.

When asked what motivated Brian to take on this role, he noted, “I grew up on Cape Cod and have spent the majority of my life in and around the ocean: boating, fishing, and surfing. As a lifelong educator and ocean enthusiast, I'm most excited to help build a community motivated to create innovative solutions for living in a changing environment and maintain a sustainable and enjoyable life for everyone who lives in coastal areas.”

We are thrilled to have Brian on the team and cannot wait to get started on September 14th.
