Do you need to score a few points higher on your ACT to win a certain scholarship? Maybe you are a few points away from qualifying to get into your dream college. Then this workshop is for you!

This workshop is a practical hands-on instruction session developed by Chad Cargill. Chad is a graduate of Oklahoma State University with a degree in Industrial Engineering. While in high school, Chad took the ACT 18 times and raised his score from a 19 to a 32! This workshop is packed full of relevant, practical information on how to raise your ACT score as he did. Is how you that the ACT is beatable and that each test will ask you the same questions, just worded differently. The workshop covers what will be on th test and how to master the techniques. The workshop is NOT a practice test. It covers general ideas about the ACT as a whole and the individual sections of English (including what the test-maers are looking for and the relevant English rules needed for the test), Math (including exactly what formulas and rules you need to answer virtually every question), Reading (including three strategies on how to best take the readin comprehension section), and Science (including common question types and strategies to understand and beat the science reasoning section).

Chad Cargill will present his ACT prep workshop on Drury's campus on Friday, September 25. The cost is $40/student. Check should be made payable to MHS. If you want to attend, please sign up here (https://forms.gle/PJtHHnSxfg2cREKw6) and pay by Friday, September 11.

Here are answer to commonly asked questions regarding the ACT:

*What is the ACT?
The American College Test (ACT) is a standardized test used for college admissions. It assesses a student's general educational development and their readiness for college level work. The ACT includes multiple-choice tests in English, math, and reading. Students may also opt to add on the science and/or writing subtests. Please note that very few university require the writing subtest so we recommend students DO NOT take it.

*Why do students take the ACT?
Students take the ACT test in order to obtrain a score to meet the minimum admission requirement for 4-year universities in which they are interested in applying. 2-year colleges and technical scools often use ACT scores as the placement test for English and math coures. Additionally, high ACT scores often translate to scholarship dollars. For reference, see the following links for information regarding ACT scores and schlarships at a couple of state universities our students often attend:
Missouri State Univeristy- https://www.missouristate.edu/FinancialAid/Scholarships/Freshman.htm
University of Missouri- https://admissions.missouri.edu/costs-aid/scholarships/freshman-scholarships/

*When should students take the ACT?
Students who plan to be college bound after the high school can begin taking the ACT at any time. We recommend VERY high ahcieving students begin taking the ACT during their sophomore year. Most college bound students begin taking the ACT during their junior year.

*How many times can a student take the ACT?
A student can take the ACT test no more than 12 times total.

*How is the ACT scored?
See the following site for information about how the ACT test is scored: https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/scores/understanding-your-scores.html

*How much does the ACT test cost to take?
-The ACT Test costs $68, which include English, math, and reading sections.
-The ACT Science Add-On fee is $4. Students who are planning to study a STEM related field are advised to take the science add-on.
-The ACT Writing Add-On fee is $25. Please note that only a small handful of universities require the ACT plus writing so we do NOT recommend students take it unless their school of choice SPECIFICALLY asks for a writing score.
-MHS will admiinster the ACT at ACT on a designated school day for students who need to take the ACT. This will be provided to students at no cost. More details to come!
-Remember that students who are eligible to participate in the federal free/reduced lunch program are eligible for 2 (total, not per year)fee waivers. Fee waivers are available in the counseling office.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to your child's counselor.

Thank you!

The second stop on our summer college tour was at the University of Missouri- Columbia. We got lots of steps in on this big and beautiful campus. Students were impressed with the campus as a whole, but particularly enjoyed seeing the library, the dorms, and the amazing recreation center.

We also try to get a taste of favorite local restaurants so, of course, we had to have lunch at Shakespeare’s Pizza. We made a pit stop in Jefferson City where we indulged in ice cream at the iconic Central Dairy. Fun fact: Mrs. Badgett’s grandfather, Charles Naylor, handcrafted the booths and tables at Central Dairy in 1954, and they remain as sturdy today as the day he built them.

Our summer campus tours began last week with a visit to Pittsburg State University in Kansas. It was a beautiful day on a beautiful campus. We grabbed lunch at a local favorite, The Mall Deli. PSU has made some of these students’ short list!

*Of course, Mr. Mason had to pose for silly pictures!
