Protect yourself and your loved ones by prioritizing essential farm safety. Always wear protective gear like goggles, masks, and steel-toed boots. Maintain machinery with shields in place and NEVER skip lockout procedures!

✅ Use ROPS on tractors
✅ Train for chemical handling
✅ Keep kids away from danger zones

Remember to always turn off equipment before servicing, protect PTOs with shields, guard moving parts, and dress safely—no loose clothing or jewelry allowed!

On a crisp fall morning in 2013, my routine commute led to unexpected tragedy. Those red gas containers I walked past daily were just part of the scenery...until they weren’t. A simple spark turned into a lesson on safety we’ll never forget.

10-year-old Christopher Allsup, convinced his brother Chad to go outside. Perhaps recalling family time around the fire pit the night before, Christopher thought it would be fun to start a small fire in the backyard. When newspaper and matches didn’t work, Christopher went into the garage and grabbed one of those gasoline containers.

Christopher backed away from the fire pit but, unknowingly, stood in a cloud of highly flammable vapors escaping from the old, unsafe container. Five hours later, Christopher succumbed to burns covering more than 90 percent of his body.

Laura E. Jones and her team took a deep dive into Maine's emergency records from 2008 to 2022 to see how farm injuries really stack up—and the results were eye-opening! They found that what causes injuries, how they happen, and who gets hurt can be very different depending on age and gender. For example, women were more likely to get hurt by animals, while men had more injuries from equipment. As people get older, falls and overexertion become a bigger problem, but younger folks faced more injuries from things like fires and farm vehicles. Overall, farm injuries have been on the rise, and these findings suggest that safety strategies should be tailored by age and gender to really make a difference. https://doi.org/10.1080/1059924X.2026.2628600
