A Promise Made in 1858

When Minnesota became a state in 1858, leaders set aside public lands to create what is now known as the Permanent School Fund—a resource dedicated to supporting public education for generations of students.

More than 165 years later, that fund continues to benefit schools across Minnesota.

This November, voters will consider a constitutional amendment that would modernize how annual distributions from the fund are calculated.

Why is this proposal being considered?

• The fund has grown to more than $2.3 billion.

• Experts concluded the current distribution formula no longer reflects many modern trust and investment management practices.

• A nonpartisan task force unanimously recommended updating the formula.

• The proposal later received strong bipartisan support before being placed on the ballot.

• The amendment does not raise taxes.

• The goal is to help today's students benefit from a larger share of the fund's returns while preserving the fund for future generations.

Three Things to Know

✓ The Permanent School Fund has supported schools since 1858

✓ No new taxes

✓ Protects a legacy created for Minnesota students

Minneapolis Public Schools is hosting this class. Join a welcoming space to explore parenting topics for elementary‑age children, reflect on new developmental stages, and build community with others navigating similar experiences. Sessions include discussion, resources, and practical strategies tailored to the needs of families beyond the early childhood years.
