Farm fresh eggs and pork are still for sale outside of the Adolescent House. Serve yourself and pay via Venmo, cash, check, or card (come on in to pay by card!)

As Adolescents seek to find their places in the world, being connected with the economy provides a real and meaningful way to engage in society. At Mountainside, the Adolescents run several businesses where they direct each step of the process. One central aspect of their microeconomy is raising pigs and layer hens for meat and egg sales. This runs alongside selling school-themed merchandise, homemade wreaths, and holiday baked goods. Community Breakfasts and the Seedlings Dinner in partnership with Field & Main Restaurant round out microeconomy operations. Each month, the Adolescents track all their expenses and income in ZipBooks, allowing them to make informed decisions regarding each business endeavor. Proceeds from their businesses support their educational program and their trips, including the ninth-grade international trip, a culminating experience on their Mountainside educational journey.

This Monday, August 31st, is the first Montessori Guidance with Jenny meeting of the school year! The topic will be Defining and Supporting the Work of the Young Child: What does it mean, when a Guide refers to the activities in which your child engages in the Children's House as work? How do you define work? How does work differ from play, and why is appropriate work vital for the healthy development of the young child?

The Adolescents are off to a great start! Today, they are back from their yearly Odyssey Trip. This overnight trip allows the Adolescents to come together as a group, celebrate returning members of the community, and welcome those who are new, as well as simply enjoy time outdoors together. This year, the Adolescents traveled to Bentonville's Low-Water Bridge Campground on the Shenandoah River. There was lots of water time: wading, fishing, and floating in the river. The group got to know each other further and have begun to gel as an adolescent cohort.

What a wonderful evening it was! Yesterday we welcomed parents back on campus for Parent Orientation. We got to see some familiar faces, as well as some new ones. Our Guides shared important information about themselves, their environments, and what families can expect this school year. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the back-to-school picnic on Sunday!

During the summer, our younger community members help the Adolescent class in taking care of the chickens on campus. The Toddler and Primary summer camps take turns in making sure our chickens have water, food, and some time out of their coop. Throughout the school year, the children become acquainted with the chickens as they visit to share some extra fruits or veggies. In the summer, they help collect eggs and stamp them to prep them for sales.
