“I don’t want to do track… I don’t like running.”
We hear that a lot.
This week, I was talking with a colleague about track and field, and they made a point that really stuck with me.
For many kids, their idea of track comes from one thing they remember in gym class…
Running the mile.
Now, don’t get me wrong… the mile is an amazing event, and there are athletes who genuinely love distance running. Every track team needs those athletes, and they’re a huge part of what makes our sport special.
But the mile is just one event.
Track and field has something for just about everyone.
Maybe your child is a sprinter. Maybe they’re a hurdler. Maybe they love the excitement of pole vault. Maybe they’ll find success in the high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, or relays. There are so many different ways to compete and be successful.
It’s kind of like asking a kid if they want to play basketball… and then only having them try to dunk. If that’s all they experienced, they might think basketball isn’t for them.
The same can happen with track.
If your child has ever said, “Track isn’t for me,” we’d encourage them to give it a chance. They may discover an event they never knew they’d love.
Our Marshall Track & Field Camp is coming up July 13–17, and we’re excited to already have around 80 athletes registered! It’s a fun opportunity for kids to experience a variety of events, learn new skills, and discover what they enjoy most.
There’s still time to join us! We’d love to see a few more future sprinters, hurdlers, vaulters, jumpers, throwers… and yes, even future distance runners! ❤️
