Foster care was our Life Skills Class topic. As a school, we like to teach about empathy and understanding not just talk about it. So today, we took a deep look into the foster care system. Helping students understand that there are no "winners" when it comes to foster care because parents lose their children, children lose their siblings, families, and their innocents. Students learned about trauma, neglect and abuse, the cycle of foster care, the disease of drug addiction, and poverty. Nothing was sugar-coated -- I am so proud of the students; they were engaged, they asked profound questions. By looking at these kinds of challenging subjects, students become empowered, more aware, and empathetic of the world in which they live.
