People often look at student work and the first thing they say is "these kids are so talented!" And while the compliment is always appreciated I cringe because they just don't get it. Yes, innate skill is helpful in creating meaningful and impactful artwork BUT what is really displayed in the work is a curious mind, a soul willing to risk letting others see its deepest parts, eyes that see what others ignore, the will to soldier on through doubt and disappointment, the tenacity and perseverance to think and rethink, do and redo. These students are warriors. None of it comes easy. All experience doubt, failure, and still they create. This cannot be distilled into a single word like "talent" which implies that it comes easily. Art is not easy.
